Correct Coppersafe dosage

Hi,

Im thinking of adding Fritz Coppersafe to my tank for possible velvet.

The problem is that my tank is 5.5 gallons and the directions are for 4 gallons (1 teaspoon or 5 ml)

I've read around and saw that to much copper can be dangerous for the fish ( theres 2 glofish tetras in there) Ive also read that some folks add it gradually...in smaller amount and over a couple days. I have no idea how they break it up like that.

The bottle itself says Do Not Overdose....So Im wanting to be careful here.

Why do you want to add Fritz Coppersafe to your tank?

My calculations come out to 6.87ml for a 5.5g tank.

Are you sure the fish have velvet?
If you shine a torch on the fish after the lights are off, and see if they have a yellow gold sheen over their body. If they do, then they have velvet.

Fish with velvet will also rub/ flick against objects in the tank.

Velvet can usually be treated with heat. You raise the water temperature to 30C (86F) for a couple of weeks. Turning the tank light off during this can help.

Before you treat the tank, do the following things.
Work out the volume of water in the tank:
measure length x width x height in cm.
divide by 1000.
= volume in litres.

If you have big rocks or driftwood in the tank, remove these so you get a more accurate water volume.

When you measure the height, measure from the top of the substrate to the top of the water level.

You can use a permanent marker to draw a line on the tank at the water level and put down how many litres are in the tank at that level.

There is a calculator/ converter in the "FishForum.net Calculator" under "Useful Links" at the bottom of this page that will let you convert litres to gallons if you need it.

Remove carbon from the filter before treating or it will adsorb the medication and stop it working.

Wipe the inside of the glass down with a clean fish sponge.

Do a 75% water change and gravel clean the substrate. The water changes and gravel cleaning will reduce the number of disease organisms in the water and provide a cleaner environment for the fish to recover in. It also removes a lot of the gunk and this means any medication can work on treating the fish instead of being wasted killing the pathogens in the gunk.
Make sure any new water is free of chlorine/ chloramine before it is added to the tank.

Clean the filter if it hasn't been done in the last 2 weeks. However, if the filter is less than 6 weeks old, do not clean it. Wash the filter materials/ media in a bucket of tank water and re-use them. Tip the bucket of dirty water on the garden/ lawn. Cleaning the filter means less gunk and cleaner water with fewer pathogens.

Increase surface turbulence/ aeration when increasing the temperature, using salt or medications because they reduce the dissolved oxygen in the water.

Depending on the filter, you can reduce the water level in the tank so it holds 4 gallons instead of 5. After you have finished treatment, you can increase the water level again.

Actually.....I'm not sure its velvet. Truthfully...I dont know what it is. I was thinking its velvet from the sick fish guide that Fritz has on the box.

I've taken pictures of it here. The ones under 31 Jan.

I first notice the ...idk....blemish....growth...possible Velvet on top of his head, infront of this Dorsal fin, about 3 weeks ago. Then it maybe showed up on the dorsal fin, itself. Then it showed up between his Dorsal fin and Caudal/Tail fin.

At this point I had already started treating him with Kanaplex. When it showed up the second time I tried E.M. ERYTHROMYCIN.

Things seemed to clear up after that.....till it showed up this past week on his left side.

Like I said I dont know what " It " is. It might also be the thing that did the damage to his Doral and Anal fin.

It doesnt seem to bother my fish to much. He swims and eats fine. He doesnt his or stay on the bottom, mostly hangs out mid-level. Most of the time he looks okay, though a couple days he looks down....not so great.

Anyway....Please look of the pictures and tell me what you think.

I do really, really want to thank you for the terrific answer you gave me. It will be super help if I proceed with Coppersafe treatment.

In the meantime....what do you think ails my poor fish?
