Hi I need help
have rescaped my Juwel 60 tank, getting rid of the boxed in section (I already had a seperate internal filter running) and replacing the gravel with sand. I kept about 30% of the old water. I moved my 5 cory sterbia to the hospital tank and for a few days until the tank had settled a bit (the water has still not cleared perfectly - added some filter wool to the sponge filter and that has helped). They have now been in the new set up for about two weeks and do not seem happy with it. They hide at the back under plants most of the time and if they do venture out they dash back as soon as anyone approaches the tank, which they didn't do before. Two days ago I added two black widow tetras from my main tank just in case having other fish moving in the upper levels would help a bit but no the black widows also now hide at the back sitting near the bottom and have lost most of their black colour like when they are stressed.
I thought it might be the bright reflectiveness of the sand that was the problem so moved a plant to the front and put in a largish piece of slate to make a darker area but no change in their behaviour. There has been a slight increase in Ph that tank was usually about 6.8 and at the moment it is 7.2. (could be that the yeast fed CO2 is about run out) the Ammonia is 0.
I thought that cories were supposed to prefer sand to gravel but mine seem to be treating the change over as a real loss in their conditions. Any ideas? Should I go back to gravel?
thanks

What you need is a large measure of patients. Sand is their natural substrate so I would leave well alone and instead keep an eye on the parameters, other than the pH you do not state any of the others. C. sterbai prefer warmer temperatures and it would be a good idea to have the temperature set at around 80ºF, this will naturally make the fish more active.

The fish would have been in stress from being moved about and if the parameters are not the same this will add to it. The fact that the water is still cloudy indicates a couple of possibilities, one the sand was not cleaned well enough or you are feeding the same amount as you were before the changes and because of the stress they are not eating as well.

I would feed a little less, change 25% of the water every two days and and leave any lights of for a few days.

Thanks Ian
the temp is 26 so I will increase that and do the water changes you sugggest and leave the light off, I guess the plants will be ok for a few days. It would be great to see these little guys shuffling around like they used to.

I agree with Ian. My first thought was that they were hiding because they got caught and moved around. They are hiding now to keep from being caught again and need time to settle in.

Whenever I catch fish to move them around (other than the Bettas) they always need time to resettle.

It's very unlikely that they are objecting to the sand. :)

I agree cories prefer sand and should be on sand if possible all the time...I find when a fish is moved around they act skitish for a day to weeks to months according to the fish

Give Sterbai sometime to adjusting the new enviroment, Sterbai can be shy and hiding a lot of time.

My Sterbai always hinding out when I am past by the tank. The only time I will see them [Don't know how many I have] when I treat them with blood worm and the bright light off [only dim light on] and they are come out form the plants area. Your Sterbai after they feel secure in new enviroment you will see them come out in no time. :p

I agree. It could be that they are just nervous because you changed the tank. I switched to sand and my cories hid. I added plants and they hid. I added driftwood and you guessed it they hid. Just give them some time to adjust. Some are shyer than others. Mine are now happily rooting in the sand and I'm sure your's will calm down eventually. Just have some patience and give them time to adjust.
