I thought corys benefit from sand because of the soft texture won't hurt its barbs and my plecos are fine with sand except from the mess they leave on it lol
Corys will love sand as willtang3000 said it is soft and wont hurt the barbs. As for sand and other catfish...I use sand in all my catfish tanks and yes they make alot of mess but at least on the sand it is easily spotted rather than hidden between the gravel. Its all about what you like best
For years I used fine gravel, but at the start of this year I began switching some of my tanks over to sand. I would never go back to gravel again! It's so much fun watching them enjoy digging in it instead of just probing between the pieces of gravel.
If you get sand (or fine gravel, for that matter) make sure that it has no sharp edges. Play sand, like you get in home improvement stores, is inexpensive and safe for little children's sandboxes. This is inexpensive and safe for corys too.
Thanks all, yea, not sure what the LFS was going on about with pl*cs and sand but anyway, yea, cories would be ok is what I thought, better to be safe than sorry!!!!
Inch - I have silica sand which is very fine - I think I'm going to have some happy cories then by the sound of it!!!!! Should be fun to watch!
Also, what about like..natural looking gravel (pebbles). I'm asking becuase I'm also interested in putting sand in my 10 gal, that has Juli Cories, but my parents aren't too keen on the idea .
The only problem I have with plecs and sand is the little buggers keep trying to dig in as if their on the Normandy beaches.
Most fish won't actually eat the sand but a large number (I have watched my cories and bala sharks as well as numerous catfish) will sift the sand through their gills in an attempt to locate food.
