Hi, I was wondering about how i could get coraline algae growth, does this only appear when you have bright lights in such as a reef set-up, when you have specific chemicals in the water, or at a certain salinity?
I will be taking a Green spotted Puffer from freshwater to Marine conditions over about 10 months, but i am only planning at the moment to have a few other marine fish with it at that 10month stage, so not corals.

Please advise

Adam

Coraline algae needs good calcium and mag levels - as long as you are using a good salt such as D & D h2Ocean you will be fine as you will not have any hard corals to use the mag and calc. for their growth

Thanks for your help Seffie!

You ae very welcome, so, there might be some tank pictures by Thursday then :good: are you going to start a journel of the transition, we would all love to follow your journey from fresh to salty

yes i will. promice :)
I will be very intrested to find out what effect the salt changes every few weeks will have on the puffer, algae, and bacteria in the filter, seems like its gonna be ages though, got to cycle the tank first, 6 weeks(maybe a little less if i can use some mature media) then up by 1.002 every 2-4 weeks, i think im only gonna take it to 1.018, if i am right the damsels will still be ok at that salinity right, will the coralline algae?

yes me too, am really interested in this

Can't you just clone the tank Ad?

Are you going to use dead live rock and then when up to a good SG put in more live cured live rock? What is your plan? As for coraline, can't imagine it will even start until your sg is at a decent level. Damsel will be ok at that sg but i would go higher, 1.022

You will also need to ensure that your phosphates are kept to a minimum, as it inhibits the calcification of the coraline algae. Running phosban in a reactor and/or grow macro algaes like chaetomorpha in a refugium or even in the display tank itself, to absorb it from the water.

Ok, thanks guys, i will be using some macro algae in the main display.

Seffie- the plan is decor wise to have artificial reef rock, i know this wont do wonders for the water quality, but thats what i have a big ex filter for(which i will stuff with live rock rubble) I just cant afford the live rock, maybe if i was doing marine from the start, but i have had to buy external filter etc.

thanks.

EDIT: Seffie, what did you mean by "clone" the tank??

Sorry, use mature media such as filter wool, substrate etc so you have an instant tank - no cycle - woo hoo. People who already have fresh water tanks set-up would do this. You can also put another filter in your main tank for a month or so (if you have the time) then just put the mature filter in the new tank.

You have a fresh water tank don't you?

yes, i have 2 other freshwater tanks, but neither have the right ammount of media to be able to start this tank and keep theirs going, or are the right size to be able to run the filter on seen as its 1200lph and cant turn down, i am going to use as much mature media as i can forage from both tanks without(hopefully) upsetting the filtration on the current set-ups.

Adam, stick just the filter media in there on the gravel - least that way you will get some :good:

cheers, as i am using the artificial reef rock, and powerheads to mimic a marine tank, will i get any bacteria on them as live rocks do??

yes, you will get some bacteria on them but no filtering capabilities  you sure you can't push the boat out for some live rock, you can get it now for about £5 a kilo (not form shops)

ps

have just replied on your plants sale form :good:
