Copyright Question

If the general concensus of this thread is correct, that anything you post on here is copyright unless you state otherwise, surely it is infringement of copyright law to quote someone in a thread, as you have used their copyrighted material without permission?

I know the laws in the UK (and other parts of the world) will differ from the US but I found the quote below with a simple Google search. It is from this site.

There are two important facts to understand:

1. By federal law, you or any other citizen creating an orginal work has copyright protection for it -- automatically, whether you attach a notice or not.

2. There is a "fair use" exception to copyright that allows you or anyone else to quote from copyrighted material without having to seek or obtain permission.

You can read the article for the factors/criteria used to determmine "fair use".

There is also a link at the end of that article to the complete federal title on copywrite.

as far as i was aware it was owned by the forum and not the member writing it.

Nope.

Read the points above about everything you write being your copyright unless you actively sign it away. There is no such signing provision that I have seen in the rules and as such it remains your copyrighted material that you have chosen to place on the forum.

so how dd they use the stuff in the magazine, just out of curosity?

the law may be on your side, but people will not always follow it, indeed some think they are above it!
