im running a 150ltr tank with v2 400 skimmer, power head and external canister filter and am trying to work a way out to cool the tank without having to spend mega bucks, anyone got a good solution that is practical?

Running fans helps - one or two threads on the subject in this section - have a look round, here's one to start you off

Cooling fans

My latest addition is a Cooler Thermostat to run the fans - they only come on when the tank hits 79F and seem to be doing a pretty good job. Whole lot (fans and thermostat) sorted for around £60

Ive bought the same sorta fans but for a smaller tank for my axolotl. Bob,do they really drop the temp by a fair few degres or does it take fo ever for them to drop by only one degree

I've got the 4x version of these fans and they do seem to be doing the job.

Recently fitted twin 150w halides and temp shot up to 84F, algae everwhere, corals looking very sick - fitted fans and timer and temp never gets past 79.5 now. Fans kick in only after halides have been lit for a couple of hours then run for about a half hour. Then off and on till halides go out on the timer.

Corals seem much happier now and me and the rowaphos are getting to grips with the algae!

I dont know if this will be of help, but I purchased one of these 4 fans cooling units.

Basically they are 4 PC fans in an adjustable frame with on off switch but I found it really usefull in controlling the temperature last summer and feel more confident about 2007.

>< Thinks to himself >< I wonder if Peltier devices can be of use..... Gobble up energy though....

Water is a sod really. It is sometimes referred to as the 'universal coolant'.
In otherwords, to CHANGE the temperature of water takes an AWFUL lot of energy.
Translate this into 'difficult' and 'costly' to do.

If It were me and I was wearing my engineering hat and had to tackle this problem I'd be considering:
1) Getting my butt down to argos and buying one of those small cheapo in-car refridgerator thnigys (for your beer).
2) Rip it apart.
3) *Somehow* stick the cooling element inside the tank. I think they are made of alley so should be OK.... (he says).
4) Try and do that without electrocuting myself.
5) Considering 4).... Somehow couple the cooling element to the side of the tank (but tanks are glass & that is an insulator.....)

I'll shut up now....

Yep - that's the one I have. This seller is quite a bit cheaper though..

4 x fans link

:good:

thanks bob thats the one i've gone with, as my tank is a closed top im hoping that these little beauty's will make a difference, if nothing else take the heat of the lamps away, thus bringing it back down a little in temp, why do these things always take time to turn up!!!!!! i just want to get on and do it!
