Cooling the tank.

Yeah but I'm usually quite a sweaty betty at most times so I'm off to Glasgow tomorrow to spend my little heart out on room coolers!

How much will a room cooler cost? Is it like having a/c?
Works similar to air con, just a cheaper version and 39.99 cant be siffed at, reduced room temp to 20 degrees. You need to add water though, no big prob when you need to cool so many tanks.

only been keeping fish for a short while, but if you have external filters I guess that if you put the hole cannister into a bucket of ice and salt water it would in theory cool the canister and in turn cool the water. If it is a small tank put a fan to the side then put a damp cloth over the fan gaurd or the side of the tank. the air should be cooler as the water evaporates, not that I have tried any of these and it's only guess work.

over the past two days we've tried placing icepacks in plastic bags with the lid open, and icecubes. (its for a 10gallon that jumped to 88 degrees F)

today we took a different approach:

3 computer fans
wires from the fans
plexiglass
adapter (powersource)

some splicing is involved, but its better then nothing, right?

get a screen top and a small fan. Set the fan on top of the screen top tilted down so that it blows across the top of the water. Brought my 10 gallon down 5 degrees in an hour. Temp was WAY to high like 86-87 with white clouds. Didn't mean to bring it down so quickly. So you should def monitor temp when doing this. Another thing that may work is to wrap your tank in cold wet towels. White would be best. This will keep the sun off it and cool the glass. Just my opinion on the matter.

I found putting a couple of breeding traps at either end of the tank, then putting icecubes in them made sure the temperature was evenly distributed and the fish couldn't get their lips stuck to the ice!!!!!!!

It worked though! (That was a few years ago mind!)

I usually just turn my room ac on and that helps with the tank temperature, also instead of floating ice cubes, I place a small fan next to the tank so it will fan the surface of the water, lengthwise. That also helps a lot.

turn your lights off... remove the hood and get some air flowing over the surface od the tank - it make a BIG difference - After all these room coolers are using evaporations to cool the air passing through them... cut out the middle man :)

the lights on our tanks have been without main lights for a few days and the temp in 4 tanks hasnt gone past 30deg C - and that is what 2 of them are set at.

however I forgot to remove the lid from the 3 gal and turn the fan on... we've lost 2 guppys :(

that could be a good idea :)

it could work better if you place either a bag with icecubes or the breeding traps close to the current outlet, this way the coldwater goes everywere in the tank without having a very Cold spot.

be aware that a cooler is not air con......you wont get air con under £50 and in my experience you need to pay £150 AT LEAST to have something decent.

my cheapest unit (in the home office) was £200 and thats a bit noisy....to use one in a living room you nee to spend a lot to get a quiet one.......personally well worth though.
