I just got a pair of convicts today and put them into a tank of there own the tank is 20 gallon with gravel on the bottom and a few rocks for hiding, over the past couple of hours the male has started to chase the female around the tank like crazy! is this normal?

Yes this is normal although it could end badly. Does the female have a place to hide from him if he gets too rough? Having a divider handy isn't a bad idea either. The male thinks the territory is all his and unless she's ready to breed you may have a problem.
