they breed in pairs... but it seems i didnt judge the sex properly... saw some orange... but now it went away... apparently 1 of them is male not female... so i have 2 females, 4 males... they breed in pairs, i thought i had 3 pairs, but i dont ... will they still pair up and breed?

they should do.....how big a tank do you have that many in??

let me go take some pictures.. once i find the battery charger..

each ''trio'' is in a 10 gallon tank..... i'm probably going to try to give the 2 extras away.. or maybe trade one of the males for a female somehow... my bettas are almost done breeding i think.... males finally building bubblenest... so once they breed ill have another 10 gallon free

In my opinion a 10 gallon tank is too small for 1 pair of cons, I suggest a 20 gallon as the minimum for 1 pair.

how long does it take for them to get to 6 inches... theyre really small right now.... hopefully i have enough time to get a bigger tank before they grow to 6 inches

I was under the assumption that males had no orange on their belly. Well aparently i have a convict with a small patch of orange that i thought was female and may actually be a male. It constantly displays to a female (this fish has a ton of orange) and chases the 2 males away.

I have no idea what sex this fish is because last week it was acting like a female and now it acts like a male

yea that happened to me kinda. one of my males had some orange on him and i thought he was a she. apparently i was wrong hes a he :S

Leck, more then one convict in a 10 gallon will never live to see 6". For one, there growth would be stunted by the confines of the space. Also, with more then one in such a small space one will eventually turn on the other.

this is leck under a different name... im trying to convince my parents to let me buy a 33 gallon for my convicts... i dont know what they will say tho considering i already have 1 20 gallon, 4 10 gallons, a 3 gallon, and numerous bowls..

theyll probably want me to get rid of 1 or 2 of the 10s... my guppy breeding isnt any fun anymore and cichlids seem more fun.. i want them to grow big so i dont want to keep them cramped in the 10s theyre stuck in now.. im not sure yet what im going to do... i have 1 10 gallon with like 30-40 guppy fry in it... but they are growing too slow.. i dont know if theyll ever grow to be full size... and i have nowhere else to put them and i dont want to feed them to my convicts... this is a tough decision.......eventually my 20 gallon will turn into my convict tank, but only 1 pair is recommended for a 20 gallon right?... ahh.. this is tough...... the 3 convicts in each of the 10s are ok right now.. they chase each other but none get injured... i just dont want them cramped in there forever..... i think tomorrow i will pitch the idea to my mom about buyin a big tank maybe that all my convicts can live in..... is a 33 gallon ok for 2 pairs? what about a 20 gallon?

i still have time to decide because the convicts now are only about an inch long... shouldnt get too much bigger in the next few months.. so technically i have awhile to get another tank or decide what to do .. right?

No in my opinion a 33 gal is not good enough for 2 pairs. I would say a 55gallon for 2 pairs is about the right size. And to be honest you do not have much time left, my pair started breeding at the 1" to the 1and a half inch size.

And this is not meant as a put down directed at you , just a statement.

People do not realize how aggressive cons are when breeding till they see it first hand. If one of your pairs start breeding you will most likely have dead fish quickly.

just to clarify 20 = 20L not 20H :)

In the convicts world a 20H is much smaller than a 20L.

im on my way to petsmart right now so maybe i can convince my parents to buy a tank hehe

haha... my parents gonna buy me a new tank... something like a 48 gallon bowfront... lol.. all i said was... it would be nice to get a huge tank for breeding big fish... my dad was all into it... sayin he saw all these deals... looks like my convicts are gonna have an enormous new home... and that means im gonna have 2 empty 10 gallon tanks to put new fishies in... w00h000
