i had the 6 calico convicts in the tank trying to get a pair which turns out i had 5 males and 1 female.
all the males chased the female from dawn till dusk so i kept the best looking male and gave back the other males to the shop.
well the little female was still being chased and kept in the shadows only coming out to feed if she was quick enough no actual body damage just a very stressed little fish.
i was lucky enough to find another calico convict female but just a bit larger than the male i have .
so now in the tank i have i male and 2 females and 5 danios and at the moment its a very peacefull tank no nipping or chasing and the male has calmed down and being very pleasant to both females.
its a shame that this will not last for long but when the male chooses a female i will buy another tank for the single female and keep her as both females have stuning colours.

my convict tank is giving me the blues. the female won't breed, chases the male around all the time...i feel like punching that fish!

Maybe the male is to small. That happend to me before, i had a 2 inch female, and she would not get along with a 3, 4 or 5 inch. So i got her a 6 inch, and he is the most peacful convict i could find. She attempted to beat the crap out of him but he was so big she couldnt do anything. so she gave up and paired of and had babies.

ty for the reply. man....i just want a breeding pair  . i just finished watching them for 15 minutes straight and like usual...every time he comes in her view she chases him all over the place 100 miles an hour. i feel sorry for the little male. he's about 2.5" and she's 3.5-4".

which would be better to get rid of? the male and add a couple new, larger males for her to choose from? or, take her out and give the male a couple new females to choose from that are his own size? or does it even matter?

I think it would be better to have a load of females and one male than a load of males and one female. I don't think you really need to remove the offending female, though. just add another 3 or so females and the aggression will be distributed among the group and not only on the male

i see what you mean. so if i say ...added even just 2 females, then i could let a pair form, remove the rest?

at last the male has chosen a female the larger female and all is looking very good.
lots of lip locking tug of war and bull dozing the gravel no sign of cleaning a spawning site yet but its early days.
dont ya just love cichlids
