Convict Sexing

I'v got three convicts, and the guy at my LFS said that it was likely they were females, although there was a male or two in the tank. They were realy tiny when i got them (and still are ). Just wondered if you guys could help me with the sexing of them.

Convict 1
Very bright orange marking on each side.

Convict 2
No visible markings, same size as convict 1

Convict 3
Larger than the other two, seems to be the bully occasionaly. Slightly 'lighter' colouring than the other two. Has a kind of purple tint to the 'cheeks'.

If you guys need any more info then please ask.

Can you get some pics up? The first one sounds like its most likely a female with the orange markings on the side. Not too sure about the other two from the descriptions.. need to know what size they are as small cons are very hard to sex.. if they're big enough, what is the shape/size of their fins and also what their body shape is like. Pics will be the easiest way

They look like females to me - rounded at the end of the dorsal and anal fins and a more long and short body shape.

Just as a comparison, here's a pic of the male I used to have (note the taller body shape and long, pointed dorsal and anal fins):

i'll try and get a picture of the third convcit sometime, as he's slightly larger. and i've noticed that the find seem slightly different.

They could be too young to sex.

Orange markings on the sides = female, but sometimes they wont appear until they are 2''

the beauty is only scale deep... They are probably the meanest of all the cichlids, not African.

HI m8 this is easy the female is the only one with the orange on her side and she is much smaller,the male has sharp points anal and dorsal fins.

When I got my two keyhole cichlids they pretty much looked the same, but one was more dominant. Now though, one of my keyholes has a sharp pointed doral fin. The keyhole's have started to have red markings on the back of their dorsal fins.

looks like the to canvicts in the pic are males and the 3rd one with orange markings is a female!!

i know becuz im currently breeding convicts and its not that hard!!!
i gave to batches of frys to my lfs and working on a 3rd batch right now the frys are half inch long
my lfs wont take anymore convict frys lol.
they breed like mice!!!

Hey dude,

Convict (F) has orange or redish tint.

Breading them is TO EASY. Just add water.
