do convicts change there colour when mating as my 2 have just started to get some lovely goldish spots on there bellys and sides

The orange on the bellies signifies a female ready to mate. Though you don't need to breed, they jsut want to. I don't recommend breedign them unless you have plans for hefry as they beed like rabbits. If you do breed them goodluck.

Again, the orange bellies in most cases signifies a female of breeding age and size.
 
It would be a good indication. I've seen and even owned a male with orange belly when breeding, but that's extremely rare, as far as I know.

I would put money on them both being females though! :good:
 
Convicts are a just add water and watch them breed kind of fish!

With or without males, they will show that color, they're always ready ot breed, and I'm yet to see a female without the orange belly. It only intensifies i nthe presence of a male. :good:
 
Usually the black stripes become much darker and more defined. The orange belly is mainly a sign that it is a female. Also the brighter the more healthy the fish. This is skeptical but when they are fed on better live foods it does appear brighter.
