hi all
i baught 5 juvi convict cichlid form a fish stor that had them going for 99p each i thought it would be nice for my new tank but then i got think and maybe i shouldnt have rushed in to it as i dont know what can mix with them.
so could some one give me a list of what are good tank mates for them.

other chichilds (sp) unless you end up with breeding pairs then there will really get agrrisive or you end up with only a couple of female and mainly males then there males will fight for the females, i have a breeding pair with fry in a seperate tank then in one of my 170lt tanks (4ft) i have 3 male convicts, mouthbrooders, salvani, unknown chicild, red tail sahrk (Dont ask!) and a red zebra whos mate got eaten by RTCx TSN now by himself

best thing to do reduce fighting is to put in plenty of rocks and pots for them to hide in :)

well ive done something right then by have loadsa bogwood in there are they live plant eaters? as ive got alot of that in there to they havnt touched it yet.

I'm pretty sure convicts aren't plant eaters but i'm not sure. I would only keep them with really big fish such as oscars and jack dempsey. They really get agressive when they are breeding which is very often when they are older.

5 convicts may be a problem without the addition of other fish, unless their in a large tank ,100 gallons or more! The cons will fight with one another over territory, then if there is a female and a male they will pair off for sure and breed, this is when it gets nasty.

I like these fish, but have found them to be quite a nightmare, I have 6 males, 5 in a 100, one in a 20 long alone and a lone female in a 20 gallon plastic tub filtered with an ac-200. She will never get near a male for sure.

From a pair, I ended up with atleast a 1000 of these fish. I then found out nobody will take them, NOBODY. Had to use as feeders  even Had to kill some of the larger ones  . Found homes for about 20.

What size tank??? My five males are with 3 redhooks and a redhead cichlid and one pleco in a 100.
