Convict aggression

25l is just way too small for a pair of convicts

I know it’s not great it was only bought for a fry tank but it seems to be that the convicts are pretty much taking over the entire tank, unless the other fish are stuck to the glass they go for them. My convicts are still small maybe 2 inch.

If you move the flower pots, caves to the corners of the tank, the fish should confine their territory to that area and be less likely to attack the other fish that can hide at the other end of the tank. But having said that, you need to watch all cichlids when they are breeding because some go nuts and will take over an entire tank.

A 25 litre tank is probably a bit small for the adults to breed in. Leave them in the bigger tank and hope they don't go nuts.

If you do have to move them into the smaller tank, then do a big water change every day or two.

I may have to resort to moving tank as the convicts have just dominated the other lol I didn’t realise how aggressive these fish actually act

They are about as mean as you can get, at the end of the day you are the only one that can make a decision that will be best for all your fish.

Update-

Moved parents to a breeder tank and within an hour the eggs were laid! They laid eggs in their cube type ornament I moved with them, all of the eggs are brown which I’m told are fertilised. What do I need to do now? I have filled my tank up with aquarium water and a already established little waterfall filter. Any advice at all regarding, heating, lights, feeding, water changes, anything at all that might help me get as much as I possibly can from these eggs?

How long will they take to grow into wrigglers?
How long until free swimming?
How long until the parents breed again?

So many questions just anyone, if you have any amount of knowledge at all for me ide be appreciative

Thankyou so much

Convicts are cool little fish, but you have some things to consider.

Their fry are very hard to rehome. Indeed, no one wants fry, so you have to grow them to close to 2 inches and then beg a store to take them. Growing them calls for more space than you currently have, so you'd be stuck with getting a large tank to rear them in. Meanwhile, as soon as the young are moved (keep them with the parents so they can learn parenting), the parents will spawn again. And again. And again. And after that, they'll spawn again....

In our aquarium club, when bags of one inch convicts come up for auction, even with 50-100 people in the room, there are often no bidders. I know people who have bought bags as feeders for larger Cichlids, only some convicts have survived and taken over the tank when they began breeding. All that makes them wonderful creatures, but it does pose difficulties for you now.

I’ve already made agreements with 2 of my LFS to take all of the fry in for me. They said just give a weeks notice and whey will take all of them. I know a lot of people have issues which is why I deliberately contacted before I tried to breed them haha

I think you've done the right thing in moving them out any breeding cichlid can kill other fish so its not to be taken lightly. When I get some cichlids again I'm only ever going to keep single specimens for that reason.

Make sure the tank is well oxygenated with lots of surface agitation, some live plants will help too. The fish will do most of the work but you will need some fry food as they start to loose their egg sacks.

Keep a real close eye on the parents too, the male could kill the female so if it starts to get hairy watch which one looks after the brood most and remove the other.

Don't worry if they eat the eggs, they will likely breed again very soon and over the coming months they will learn how to be more successful meaning more babies survive etc. I think you said they are in a 25 litre tank at the moment, I would consider getting a 125 litre (or bigger) for them rather than putting them back into the community tank as they are going to continually breed now so will always be a risk to the others.

Okay I’ll consider a tank for them once I have a bit more money. I’m using liquifry 3 will that be okay? And should I not be feeding this until they are free swimmers?

Just an update, my eggs haven’t hatched yet and a few have started turning white - is this normal? I thought they would have hatched by now?

It depends on the temperature, the eggs will take longer to hatch in cooler water. You don't normally see fry until about day 5-7
