Ok, i found someone elses journal for turning the same tank into marine

I also realised that the equipment they are going to use was the same as the stuff people had suggested to me

so i have his shopping list :D

2 Juwel High Lite Tubes Marine £39.98 (seapets)

2 Hydor Koralia 1 power heads £44.01 for both (ware house aquatics)

V2Skim 400 Protein Skimmer £65 (reefstore)

Now to see if I can get them any cheaper. Looks like I got the tank &cabinet cheaper, his list said £229, I paid £150 for mine.

Just wondered which bulbs I should order.

1 blue and 1 marine?

http://www.aquatics-online.co.uk/catalogue/juwel-high-lite-t5-fluorescent-lamps.asp

thats the website with them on :)

Oh, it says Juwel recommends having one of each. I think i will go with that then!

Huh? they aren't in the list on that site lol

total cost: £112 for the unit, 2 bulbs, and 2 reflectors. free carriage cause its over £75 :)

i won't order just yet, i need to price everything else

Oh, Nemo, it looks as though I can't have a sump :( the cabinet is 1" too small for the tank I had in mind to use as the sump.

I have also heard bad things about overflow boxes, and I REALLY didn't want to drill the tank.

update: I have removed the Juwel filter from the tank and cleared away some of the tropical fishkeeping items i have collected

As long as you get something like the Tunze overflow box you would be fine, they have an anti syphon

Oh thanks Seffie. It's just getting the tank into the cabinet below which is the problem =\

I'm not sure the skimmer would fit in there aswell. obviously the heater would

Oh, also, the tank i was going to use as the sump is the Elite 35 litre. (or is it 30? i cant remember)

it has a silver trim on the bottom which is the main reason why it doesn't fit in the cabinet (it adds the extra inch)

do you know if this can be removed? i think it helps keep the tank together.

Hi Hawkins - must admit I'm wondering if it is worth it? it will add a small amount of water volume but by the time you get everything in it, will it be adding any real value to the tank? If you can't hide your skimmer away in it, is it worth all the hassle

That is what i was thinking. im going to see if my LFS has any of these skimmers so i can see what size it is, and see if they can do it any cheaper than reefstore (£71 inc delivery)

So the LFS didn't have ANY marine equipment :(

I used to go there for my fershwater fish when i first started, then a few months ago they got rid of the marine livestock and expanded the FW, still keeping some marine equip. but it seems they have none now..

so the nearest LFS with marine is 20 miles away.

oh well!

Quick question: How often / how much water will I be removing for water changes? I think I will buy a water butt and buy the water premade from the LFS. If I do this, will the water butt need to be constantly heated?

Thanks!

Well, I always say 20 % it always kept my tank very stable doing that amount

No, just keep the water in the dark

Thanks!

So the premade water you buy from the LFS is... RO water with salt? will it be right to go straight into the tank, after i have heated it to the right temp?

Some is plain RO water, some is mixed with salt

If you choose to go the pre-made salted water route, just check the TDS reading of the water and ask them what sg they make the water up to :good: and yes, you would just heat up and add to tank.

For your first fill up you can put the water in the tank and bring up to heat or mix in the salt

I have found this locally and wondered if I should just buy it instead of converting Click here

Just wondered what you think that is worth, and if I should get it? :)

thanks
