I have a brackish tank (1.005) that's been running well for years that I want to convert to saltwater. I would prefer not to start from scratch and re-cycle the aquarium. Am I able to simply boost the salinity over a period of time? I don't want to lose all the good bacteria that's built up. Thoughts? Many thanks.

Yes you can slowly increase the sg - Neal Monks is a great one to ask about this on the Brackish forum.

However there is more to consider, if you are going to have a fish only tank then fine, go this route but if you are thinking along the lines of a reef with corals then I'm afraid this will not work

Anyways, :hi: to the salty side

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I'm simply looking for a simple fish-only tank. How much and how fast should I change the SG? Thanks.

If you haven't been using ro water for your brackish tank you want to start over.

Luke he doesn't want a reef so his water is fine :good:

I really would ask for Neale's help with how fast and by how much, he is the expert

Still IMO use RO water as you get a head start on keeping nitrates and phosphates down.

I think the bacteria is different at an sg that low. I remember reading something that it changes it the teens (1.015, .016 for example). You'd end up recycling anyway.

Neale is an awesome one to ask regarding this. :good:
