Constipation/columnaris/dropsy

Also get some veg into her, keep her going to the toilet, as antibiotics can cause constipation, good luck.

Wish you luck Andie. I hope your silly girl pulls through. What is it with all the diseases lately? Somebody post something funny to cheer us up, please!

Funny? Hmm. Well . . . Brill has been attacking and is now trying to eat the thermometer in his tank :look:

As to the vegetables, she won't eat them. She doesn't give peas a second glance- Fiyero is my little piggy so he gobbled his right down, but Galinda won't touch it. I don't dare feed her anything else, because I hate to block her up more, but nobody around here sells daphnia, so I haven't really got anything in the way of a laxative that she'll take :(

I'm so worried for her- the pressure has started to affect her swim bladder now, and she's got a 'head down' posture. I lowered the water levels so now the plant leaves are spread out more and she rests on them so the surface is only milimetres away . . . the salt baths are apparently not relieving the pressure. Is there anything else I can try?

Ya know...if she wasn't coned out all over..those scales you saw raised may have just been from her belly being so bloated...the skin/scales have got to go somewhere after a while..they aren't gonna just lay down when her tummy is all pooched out as far as it will go.

She could quite possibly be eggbound...since it is a girl and she is pooing but she's still all bloated and her scales sticking up around her front section. If she is..I'm sorry I have no advice on that except pray....as that doesn't normally turn out so great, I should know..I've lost 2 to it so far. (sorry, I know I'm not helping any by saying that though :( )

I'm not saying don't treat her with the Maracyn..cas you should, definately. Because constipation can lead to a bacterial infection..which could be causing the columaris, which you definately want to treat.
I would keep the temp lowered and not raise it, more infection will be worse then a little bit of a cold tank, imo.

Have you tried looking in the Frozen food section at the LPS..sometimes they sell frozen Daphnia. And there is another one that they sell that is Daphnia packaged in a gel, it's usually on the regular food isle.
Sometimes they also have frozen veggie treats..for the herbi-fish. You might try that...that will make her poo same as a pea...and chances are she won't realize it's veggies, like with a pea.

Thank you, eggbound makes a frightening amount of sense. While the other girls get "busty" and slimmer by turns, Galinda never did- she just got bigger and bigger and bigger. Just in case, though, I'll definitely ask about the veggie foods downtown- I feel so blessed that my grandmother decided to come over here a day early before taking me back home, cause that means tomorrow I'll have a car! Otherwise I'd have been screwed.

As to daphnia, I went into Pets Unlimited - the other place closes earlier - and asked about them, and he said "Oh . . . are those plants?"

*headdesk*

Hopefully Critters will carry something.

Here's poor Sarima in the jar next door, trying to figure out what on Earth is wrong with her sister:

Holy snakes, girl, what happened to you?!

Mum? Mum, she don't look too good . . .

Thank you . . . I guess I was just so determined not to lose another one this year, and now that I have I'm just . . . deflated, I guess. She seemed so tiny when I took her out . . . her little tummy looked like it should have been hard but it was so soft. I watched her for a bit to make sure she'd really stopped breathing and then I just had to accept it.

I hate the accepting part :<

I'm so sorry Andie. A big hug from me too. But you know you gave it your best and I think Galinda appreciated it.

Aww Andie...So sorry about your girl :-( I know it's hard to lose one...specially after you've tried everything you could have...but just remember that you did try...and sometimes that the best thing you can do for them :) RIP

Thank you all very much. I never enjoy losing a fish, but when you've worked so hard to save it (even when you know the chances are nil) it seems to make it even worse, somehow. :(

I'm trying to focus on the beebees right now, instead of the empty tank; they're so pleased with their own cleverness at learning how to swim, it cheers me up a lot just to watch them showing off.

Sorry bless her, R.I.P. you did everthing possible for her, daphnia is a water flea which helps digest the fish food, that why if the fish is constipated, peas and daphnia if they are still eating.

Part of grief is loss: loss of many things. One of the worst things is loss of hope. In order to work hard to save her, it required hope. You had great hope that something would work.

Fortunately hope springs new each morning. So the new babies are a great morning of hope. Give it all you've got and enjoy  :D
