I have my 6.5" and 4" O's in my 112g...I work at a pet store, and another employee from in some of his con babies to sell. They range from 1" - 2.5"...I brought home a 2.5" male con because it was only 99 cents for me! At first the oscars were terrified of it, but now they chase it around a little which seems normal, it's a new, small fish...nothing dangerous is happening just some chasing to establish tank order. I was thinking of getting another one, probably a female, (or would 2 males be ok?) to help it come out of it's shell. If they breed thats fine, and if it gets too bad I can always put them in another tank...but for now what do you think? On another forum I was told an O would eat a con, but I thought they got to 6"?

sounds ok for now... convicts are VERY aggressive and i think they could be ok with oscars. as long as the convict isnt small enough to fit in the oscars mouth i think it would be ok. if you get a pair, they will breed which makes them EXTREMLEY aggressive. the convicts will take up part of your tank, and if the oscars came near it they would try to beat them up. i think one covict is ok with the 2 oscars in there now though. if you get a pair, they breed like crazy so you may have lots of convict fry in your petstore!
sounds like a nice tank though :D

well i did end up getting the female...shes a bit smaller than the male, probably about 2"...I dont think she's quite small enough to fit in my biggest O's mouth, but I guess you never know...The male is going crazy now! He is so excited flaring at her and trying to show her his cave! (I built a rock cave that only the cons could get into)..The female has really brightened with lots of orange on her belly, and almost looks like an electric blue in her dorsal! I am actually hoping they breed because I want my oscars to be kept in check...I dont ever want them to eat a feeder, but I am eventually going to get rid of my smallest O and would like to add maybe another larger cichlid or so...(JD or Blood parrot, etc..) Everything looks like it's going well....How big do they have to be to breed? Male is 2.5" and female is, like I said, 2"...do I still have to wait a bit?

sounds awsome

just wait a couple of weeks before adding anymore fish because with 2 oscars and 2 convicts with the potential of breeding,if you add another fish(a JD) all hell would break loos

but it seems fine how it is now

About the fish fititn in the mouth.. i have a probaly 2.5-3" gold fish with my JD my male is like 10" and female is 7". It was pretty big fish i thought it would be fine then like a week later it disappeared..i was amazed. :kana:

hmmm, i only think the goldfish was eaten because

1) the aggresiveness of the JD compared to the goldfish

2)the goldfish probably died because of tropical temps.

3)goldfish are sold as feeder fish down here in some places.....go figure

but back to the topic, even though these guys seem small they have a short temper and can take on anything

tru in deed cons r agresive iv seen it first hand i had 2 cons male bout 1-1/2 inch and female 1inch or so with my 2 inch red belly pirahanas and the red bellys were thier first but in a few days the cons owned half da tank and in a week they kept my pirahanas confined 2 less then 25% of the tank the only time my pirahans swam around was @ night when it was very dark ( the only reason i could c them was cuz of the heater light) and for get when they breed 4 get it they'll keep even oscars 3x their size in check trust me iv seen it happen

:fish:

Cons are cheeky, my 4" one comes out and bites my 11" oscar then swims back to hide leaveing my oscar wondering who the hell did it.

try and get a vid of that

ok great!! I was waiting for you to answer VIP! I wanted to know how your got along! The male and female are doing good together now...the male isnt chasing her anymore, but they are together. The oscars are ok with them now. I wanted a little more aggressive fish to keep my oscars in check, so this is good!

Its cool, cons and oscars makes great tank mates along with sevs and blood parrots, they all get along fine.

Yea! I was actually thinking of getting rid of one oscar, and maybe getting a sev or blood parrot....would that me too much on the tank though?
