I am really confused about the difference between the bolivian and the german blue ram. From the photographs there seems to be little to distinguish one from the other. My lfs told me they were totally different. Is there a definitive description somewhere showing or describing the two fish?

the german rams are alot more colourful as adult

Do search on this site for bolivian ram there are lots of photos

are these two rams compatible with discus?

Both are compatable and a very good choice of tank mates for discus. But beware that the german blue rams are a tad bit sensitive to change in water peramiter. The bolivian rams are very hardy and grow a bit bigger :good: I like the bolivians better myself :shifty:

thanks!
how big does the bolivian get?

I like the Bolivians, they seem to be better bread, the Germans these days are getting poorer and poorer quality, i think its something along the same lines as the Blue Acara's too much interbreeding...thinning the gene pool :(

Gold rams are the same species as the German blue rams, but generally not as good quality and more sensitive. Quite nice though, but I draw the line at balloon and long fin rams - they are even poorer quality so even more sensitive (plus I don't like the look of them ).

Me too :)

I've also found the Bolivian rams to be hardier than the Blue Rams I can get locally as well. I never could get a pair of ramirezi to stay alive for very long, even shorter with long fins, but the Bolivians I've got are doing really well. When they get their colors in, they are very colorful. Nice spots of gold/pink/orange on the chest and gorgeous pink tinge to the fins - along with some blues when the light hits just right. Not as showy, no, but a gorgeous fish in its own right :)

ETA - The fish in my avatar is one of my bolivians.

One of the most engaging qualities of rams, beside their gorgeous colours, is their friendliness. They swim to the front and jiggle from side to side when I come into the room - its impossible not to greet them in return!

I couldn't agree more, My fav fish :good: And so easy to breed as well

I'll just add that they look so drab in the pet shop but they come to the front of the tanks to say buy me :hyper: A few weeks of conditioning and they become beauties.
