I am trying to breed my fighters and they have been conditioned for 2-3 weeks, I'm ready to breed them and the male was showing he was ready so I put the female in a breeder box(I know..) for the night to get them both really ready. Now the female has dark Vertical Stripes, her ovipositor is quite far out and very noticeable, she is trying to get to the male... Yet she's built her own nest in her box... Both fish have a nest of their own but when I tried to release her earlier he went mad and instantly started attacking her and chasing her around. I just don't get what I've done wrong... I conditioned them so that they couldn't see each other and then added her in a form of a Chimney and he built a lovely large nest... Yet she built her own large nest that took up half the top of the box...
Someone please explain this... I know the courtship is full of aggression in Betta's but he really was going in for the kill on her.

uuummmm ok how high is your water mine wouldnt breed unless its below 4" or 4" and whats the temp i have mine at 80'f he may not be ready try leaveing her in the box over night or taking her out for a day and then putting her in her breeder box back in thats the advice i was given although i didnt have a problem mine bred once i lowered the water to 4"

It could be the water level, I'll try lowering it. I hadn't thought of that, thanks. So any idea why she is building a bigger nest than him? I've taken her out for the day today and I'll lower the water tomorrow morning.

There may not be enough water flow and they are just bubbles from where she breaths? I dont know tbh ask sausagewinckle or lilfishie they ll be better at answering then me :)

I think that it was the flow from the filter or the live plants, and your male could be going at the female because some males will go crazy when breeding and will potentially kill her :good: If I were you I would wait a few days or a week and try again. Good luck I hope everything goes well!

I have to say that that is pretty strange. Sometimes young males have been known to show breeding bars, and sometimes females have made nests... The chasing is totally normal, even if one of them was a female. But to be on the safe side, do you have any photos of them just to be sure?

Females building nests is pretty normal to be honest. (just make sure she is a she  )

The water level should be around 4-6" high and there should be no flow from the filter, I don't use any filters in my spawning tank when im breeding, the filter gets added later when the fry are a few weeks old. Anyway, make sure the female has plenty of places to hide, plants, a pot etc when you release her.
Chasing is normal, some males are placid some are very aggressive.

To be honest they both sound ready, but that doesn't mean they will spawn. (its took me 4 weeks to get my pairs to spawn)

Put the female back in the tank in her chimney for 24 hours (if you have removed her), after 24 hours release her with the male for a few hours but keep a eye on them if he is being aggressive. If there are no signs of spawning going to happen then remove her back to her chimney and re release her again the next day.

I have a VERY aggressive male who chases after my female with his mouth wide open nipping her, they spawned eventually.

All bettas are different so this may not work for you. Just got to have patients and keep trying :)

There is no filter flow as it's a sponge filter and it's very weak as I've put some plants over the top to slow it down so the top of the water is perfectly still. I do have pictures of them both but in the picture the female doesn't have dark breeding stripes as she had only just been added to her first chimney and she got really stressed in it as it was a bit smaller than the breeding box she's in now. I then took her out and let her calm down and tried her in the breeding box and she bloomed in colour.

(Not the Best Drawn Circle but hey...)

I do hope they spawn D: they will have amazing babies

Me too Asteria, me too.
Thought so Sausagewinkle

The male had a small accident today... I had the water level a little higher than was needed to spawn, may be why nothing was happening, so as I was taking the necessary 2" of water out the male was cautious of the Syphoning Tube... Until he spotted the female in her chimney.
Look what he did to himself by trying to get past the Syphoning Tube to get to the female!

Seems he's OK, he was just a bit dazed for a few seconds after it happened. The place where his scales came off did bleed for a second but it didn't continue to bleed and it was only a small, small amount. I hope he's OK, if anything it seems to have made his ability to blow bubble nests better
I took the female out for the day to calm him down and he was only in the breeding box for about 30 mins so I could keep an eye on him.
