Just when I thought I understood everything that was going on, I think now I'm confused about something new! :) I have an eheim classic 22xx(i think), large external canister filter. Inside of it I have the circular ceramic discs, large sponge, porous substrate, fine floss, and a matte-black thin (1/4 inch or smaller?) pad. I was under the impression that this black pad was activated carbon, but now I'm really not sure.

Also, now that I've looked around it looks like you should only have activated carbon in temporarily? It says on the eheim site that prolonged use will let it leech the stuff it removes right back into the water. I don't understand how long it would be okay to use it, and after I remove it will I ever be able to use it again?

Very confused,
Robert

The thin black pads are carbon, and they need to be replaced every 2-3 weeks to remain effective. Once worn out, they are garbage. The question is, do you need carbon in the filter in the first place? twelve years ago I stopped using the stuff and I never looked back. For most people it isn't really necessary. It's great for clearing up discolored water, and perfect for removing medications if you have treated the tank, but in general you can simply leave it out. Water conditioners take care of the harmful elements.

Thank you very much! I couldn't get an answer to this anywhere :)

It truly is neccessary for me, I have a tank with a bunch of malachite green in it that NEEDS to come out, and I think there's still a little tanin in here from my piece of bogwood.. but I agree with you, I don't think there is really a need for activated carbon.

Tip: If you are in serious need of some good carbon, purchase a couple of aquaclear 300 carbon bags and shove those into the Eheim, they will increase the amount of carbon and cost less then the Eheim pads as well.

Thanks for the suggestion but I already went ahead and ordered an eheim carbon bag :( it was only about $5 so I can't complain. Can't wait to see my tank after I put it in!
