Can someone explain to me, why they are necessary? I would have thought they are avoiding the return of water on the inside of the tank hood? But why would that be a bad thing? Thanksx

Beacuse it can ruin the lighting, if some are not sealed.

I think they may be a thing from the past but I may be wrong

Personally, I think that they restrict air flow over the water surface which is where oxygen transfer takes place.

But I am thinking they are making really good tank dividing material if you don't want holes and you want to obscure the view of your bettas from each other!!

Ignore me, corrugated plastic makes a TERRIBLE divider, it kinks in the holders lolol

Use a piece of glass if you want a clear divider ;) Or a piece of acrylic.Use a piece of glass if you want a clear divider ;) Or a piece of acrylic.

They prevent evaporation, stop fish jumping out of the tank, stop stuff falling in the tank, keep humidity in the air trapped for air breathing fish like betta's etc.Use a piece of glass if you want a clear divider ;) Or a piece of acrylic. I use secure glass hoods now whenever possible and have had no problems with aeration. The filter usually does a good job of gas exchange which in my case at least, is external to the glass top and doesn't get stale air. It's not quite the same thing but a similar principal.
