Wondering if there's any little trick here that has not occurred to me..... I'm getting ready to fill my 55 gallon. It's dusty etc inside from sitting in the store. It's also ridiculously heavy. I cannot get it into the tub to wash it out. A hose outside isn't doable. And, it's already set up on the stand (I had to take what help I could get (and when!) to get it up there). So. What's the best way to clean this thing? Just hang over it and wash it down with a clean cloth (no soap, I know) and hot/warm water and then dry it out and assume it's clean enough?

(Now, no one accuse me of being neurotic. I'm just asking if there's an obvious, easy way to do this better than what I'm thinking!) ;)

i would just wash it out, and dry with a lint free towel etc, rinse and do agian

I had the same problem, I used a j-cloth with warm water and then dried it off using kitchen roll. I still had the odd bit of stuff floating in the water but nothing a water change hasnt got rid of.

Mine wasn't as big but I put about 2 inches of water in, then wiped it all out with a new cloth dipping into the water to clean the cloth - then when it was all clean I syphoned the water out - once the syphon had started I was able to move the pipe about to make sure it got most of the muck that was floating about, once it was empty I then cleaned the bottom with kitchen towel.

It didn't leave any bits after that

What's a "j-cloth?"

It's a UK brand of disposable cloth thats more absorbent than paper towel that you can also rinse and use again without it falling apart.

I would note that some J-Cloth types uses 'Microban' an anti-bacterial agent in the cloth - so would be worth checking!

Clean it with a 1 to 50 chlorine bleach solution. 1 part bleach to 50 parts water. After you scrub it down good, rinse it a few times until the smell of chlorine is gone and the water inside doesn't bubble. When you decide to fill it up use extra dechlor which will take out any trace chlorine left by the bleach.
