Complete Lore/History of This Forum

George Farmer used to be really active here and I know I've seen reference to Steve Chen (IAPLC winner) having an account here. The Green Aqua guys
Woah! They were in this forum! I’m a fan of both George Farmer and Balazs Farkas, do you have a link of their thread or post?

The biggest upheaval was when the founder sold the forum without telling anyone he intended to do it. Most of the moderators resigned in protest and left the forum to set up their own, and many other members left as well. This is what kribensis12 is referring to. The protest forum has since ceased to exist.
The forum has been sold again since then and a lot of the problems associated with the first sale have been resolved. The main complaint was that the previously ad free site suddenly became inundated with ads after the sale. That was resolved shortly afterwards by having ads when not logged in, but the ads disappeared when logged in. Since then the ads have reappeared whether logged in or not, but not in such great numbers.

I was heavily involved in another fish forum until it dried up and blew away due to admin neglect; I have dabbled in several others, and I'm pretty deep into a primitive archery forum. This is hands-down the best-run of all of them. (despite at least one rather incompetent newbie moderator. )

Neale Monks also used to be a member.

For some reason, members who have not posted for some time can't be found in the list of members.

The protest forum was called aq center - I can post the name since it doesn't exist any longer :) The name is currently up for sale. The last time Wayback Machine logged it was August 2019.

Wow it looked different... the spam says somerthing about online english classes or whatever in chinese. Theyre all over the place in china.... and now theyre all over the internet。 oh boy
That was a super long time ago, and the moderators got it fixed. I didn’t intend to post that, as it was an old issue, but it’s one of the only pictures I have of the old forum.

They actually sold the forum? ?
A typical path for internet venture, start a non-profit version and when its gains large enough followers, sell it to someone who wants to commercialize it.

I believe IMDB (Internet Movie Data Base) started from the Usenet group, rec.movies. Amazon bought it for $55 million in 1998

Yes.

So my biggest complaint was that the company that took it over was deleting posts/banning members who linked other websites/forums in the forum; presumably because they thought directing people to external knowledge would make them lose members.

As @Essjay mentioned - the selling of it again seemed to really turn things around and I'm happy to be back!

The current position regarding links to other forums is that links to general fish forums (rival forums) are not permitted but links to specialist forums, which have more in depth knowledge than on here, are allowed. I prefer a friendly message explaining the situation in the first instance. But if a member continues to post such links after having the rules explained, warnings are given and a member who refuses to abide by the rule is likely to end up being banned.

You can refer to other forums by saying things like "I read this on another forum" or "I'm a member of another forum" just don't name it or give a link.

This is Georges profile - https://www.fishforums.net/members/george-farmer.1344/

This was a thread I started last year about him talking about our forum on his Facebook page. https://www.fishforums.net/threads/iaplc-2020-gold-prize-and-our-forum.463301/

I dont know peoples specific profiles past this but I would hazard a reasonably confident guess they will be here in the history somewhere :)

Just an other profile I remembered as well that blows my mind!

If you dont know who Heiko is you really should :)

How much did they sell it for?
