Compatible tank mates?

Hello all!

I was wondering what most people consider to be compatible tank mates for cory catfish? I'm looking at pandas in particular. I have 29 US gal aquarium and I wanted something that would spend time in the middle to top of the tank.

I know livebearers are no good because they need a little salt.

Any suggestions?

Panda corys are not good for a newly setup tank and definatly not a cycling one as they require constant good water conditions which are hard to achieve in new setups.

Livebearers do not need salt to be healthy, although mollys can either be raised in brackish/salty conditions or freshwater and ones raised in brackish conditions do not always fair well in freshwater setups- all other common livebearers are not brackish fish at all and salt should only be used as medical treatment for them, so platys, swordtails and guppys are perfect for a freshwater setup but if you are going for mixed gender groups you need to get the gender ratios correct for the group to be stress-free as posible and also you need to be prepared for the large amounts of fry they produce.

If this is a new tank you have, i wouldn't advice panda corys as they will most likely die off- they are hard to keep alive even in matured tanks at times due to being very sensitive fish- personally i would advise you go for a more hardier cory type like albino, bronze or pepperred corys.

All corys need their diet substituted with catfish pelets and/or algae wafers, they also prefer very fine gravel or sand as due to being filter feeders, it allows them to filter through the substrate and feed easier and it will also help prevent them from getting bacterial infections/eroded barbels/whiskers; they also prefer to be in groups of at least 4 due to being very sociable shoaling fish.

Corys are very peaceful fish and can go with many types of fish, if you are still intested in livebearers like platys, guppys or swordtails these will make good companions for your corys, what fish are you interested in?

Thanks for the great information! I guess I should've stated that this tank has been fully cycled by some great gouramis who are moving to a new home, and that I have kept Corydoras Aeneas and Corydoras Panda before (with success).

It's been my experience that most livebearers do best with just a pinch of salt in there (Swordtails and mollies, anyway), but I could always be mistaken. And I know that cories don't like salt period, so I didn't want to keep those two types together.

I don't really know which types I'm interested in. I know I'm not interested in danios and neon tetras. Maybe if people would share what they keep with their cories?

Thanks again!

I have corys in all my tanks with various sorts of livebearers and neon tetras and pearl danio fry, for more unusual inhabitants i have some khuli loachs.
Corys will get along with the majority of tetras, danios, livebearers and barbs(not tigers though) and female bettas :)

My intention was to keep my peppered corys with a trio of dwarf gouramis, but in the meantime (decided not to add fish unitl after summer hols) I have had to move my male platy in with them.
The result is hilarious- he really thinks he is one of them, they all chow down together at mealtimes. He is even turning semi-nocturnal to be with his new chums; he comes out now and then to patrol in the daytime but most of the time he sits with them in the cave.
This is probably a one-off, I'm not saying he's the brightest of fish, but the point I wanted to make was that there have been no aggression issues. My ph is highish (around 8) but both species seem fine with that. I have no salt and he is in good health.

My 2 peppered and 2 bronze corys seem to get on well with a pair of bristlenoses. They all feed together on their pellets and alae wafers. The BN's keep the algae at bay too. :)

mine did fine with
- gouramis
-swordtails
-danios
-neon tetras

Hello we are new to this message board provider, but not new to the aquarium hobby. My mother is an avid fishkeeper, and I myself have been for nearly 15 years. Currently my fiance' and I have 3 tanks. One is a ten gallon divided set up with one red giant male betta and a normal sized yellow male betta. Our second tank is a ten gallon tank holding one normal sized blue cambodian male betta. Our third tank is a 30 gallon catfish tank containing two schwartz's corys, one otto, one 4.5 inch bronze cory named orson, one common pleco, and one young gold nugget pleco. One cardinal tetra also calls this tank his home along with an apple snail and two ghost shrimp. We are looking to add a larger tank for these guys and would like to know if anyone has any recommendations for a nice school of small to medium fish to place with them.

Thanks for all the great advice!

I ended up with a dozen harlequin rasboras. And I'm loving them!
