Hi people. I accidentally purchased a fresh water clam a week or two ago, seems to be doing ok btw. The long term plan was to keep a couple of clown or khuli loaches in the tank do you think they will demolish the clam ? I know that they like snails a lot and it got me thinking.....

First, how large is your tank? You might not be able to have clown loaches. Otherwise, khulis won't harm it at all.

That tank is too small for clowns im afraid the can grow up to 12 inches each and need groups of 4-5+, an alternative would be zebra loaches although they may go for the clam.

I may be a fairly new member but I'm afraid I can't bite my tongue any longer. The word 'can' is the main part in that statement. It is well known that mostly clown loach do not grow to that size within most usual sized aquariums and without being stunted.

I give a good example as I know of a relative who kept 6/7 clowns in a 60 ltr tank for around 5/6 years, they grew to a certain size and then stopped. Then once moved into a huge massive tank (about 350ltr at least) carried on growing as normal and still to this day roughly 10 years on live a happy and healthy life.

The whole clown loach lecture is becoming so tiring to read and hear now that it's untrue. Why is there such an issue?

I don't understand.........I was bought up on the idea that fish only grow to the size of the tank they are in etc etc and still know of folk who believe this to be true.

Do people not get bored either of telling the same thing?

Sorry for the rant, it's just boring to read the same constant lectures again and again. :look:

Wow, apparently after posting an answer to this before, I caught a freshwater clam when I went dipnetting today. Now I have one.

It's People who care about the welfare of fish going into the right size aquarium and are advising people what the ideal tank size for that particular fish, and trying to give good advice to prevent suffering to fish long term.
Yes it make be possible that fish grow to the size of the tank because they become stunted, but the internal organs carry on growing eventually causing a slow death. If your relative hadn't moved the clown loach to a bigger tank, who knows how long it would have lasted!!!

Everyone has a right to an opinion, but these 'boring-same constant lectures' has you call them is because people don't take advice when its given or are wrongly advised in the first place.

The clam came from P@H chrisrm when i say accedentally i mean i didnt go in to buy anything. i actually needed some denta-stix for the dog. I seem to have started a mass argument about tank stunting. Ive got my own theory on this which may get me banned from the forum and make a few enemys so ill keep quiet on that one  The way that the clam's burried its self i cant see it getting harmed anyway so i guess i was just looking to hear peoples experiences past or presnt with "snail devouring fish" vs the clam
