Hi everyone!

I've been fishkeeping for a little while with a basic tropical setup. I recently purchased a new 50g tank and am in the process of cycling. I need a little advice with regards to what fish will work.

I've compiled a "wishlist" of the fish I would love to have. Any advice/concerns etc on how compatible the members of this list are and the tank capacity would be very gratefully recieved.

OK, here goes: (inhales deeply)

Neon Tetras
Various Corydoras
Banjo Cat
Bristlenose Cat
Bumblebee Gobies (4-6ish)
Medusa Ancistrus
Chaca Chaca
Royal Panaque
Various small plecos

I get so confused by all the different websites out there saying which species are OK with others. Looking forward to any advice offered.

Thankies! :D

the gobbies new brackish water no matter what the lfs say. Most seem to be okay, never herd of Medusa Ancistrus Chaca Chaca Royal Panaque though.

I've never been to sure on who is right on that. One LFS says one thing, nother something else, lol.

I have had the BB Gobies in my previous FW tank, but they all died mysteriously over one night. No probs with ammonia/nitrite/nitrate and the other fish have been fine.

Strange... I was hoping to try them again. Perhaps not.

thats why. Theyre also supposed to be hard to keep alive in brackish water, but cant go to salt either. Personaly i think that theyre a bad choice of fish to even sell. Just a scam to get money.

Heh.. you like your cats, don't you?

This mix sounds good to me, except I'm not sure about the chaca chaca with the tetras, isn't the chaca chaca a wide mouthed ambush preditor?

Also, most of those catfish like highly oxiginated water and a bit of a current (except the chaca chaca) so you'll need a powerfull filterhead and an area of calm (achieved with judicious placing of plants and bogwood)

Good luck!

Thanks SirMinion, I was concerned the chaca chaca might be a problem too that's why I asked. You have confirmed my suspicions.

Good excuse for another tank later on. :D

Nobody in here has stated this yet... Plecos don't do salt. Just match up the aggression levels on the fish, whether they like brackish or not, and make sure no fish will fit in another ones mouth. You'll be fine. I do tons of research on the internet doing searches by their latin species names and I fins out a wealth of info.

Hi Fish Gal :)

Corydoras catfish are friendly little fish that do well in most community tanks as long as there is no salt in the water and no aggressive fish in the tank. These friendly and playful little fish harm no one and are great fun to watch.

They are schooling fish and should be kept in groups of 3 or more. Their eyes are somewhat weak and they appreciate having a cave so that they can spend some time in the shade. B)

i have kept bumble gobies before..they are tough little buggers...they wont eat flake food...u must feed them live brine shrimp

i wouldnt recommend them unless u like to do the whole brine shrimp hatchery thing...its a lot of work...mine died off quickly too

pretty fish though

My Bumblebees (sadly deceased after a tank temperature crash) were happy with live or frozen bloodworm and live daphnia.

And they were also fond of brineshimp, but I just bought it live once a week from my LFS. Let them do all the work hatching the little buggers.

Thank you all so much for the wonderful advice! I'll definitely be passing on the gobies - maybe when I'm ready to progress to brackish I'll reconsider them.
