Come All Wisemen And Women?

Hello all. Just a question out of curiosity, what would be the biggest fish that one could put in a 35 gallon aquarium who would live peacefully by himself. (the tank is a tall hexagon). Thanks

The shape of the tank really limits your choices, i'm guessing this tank is no more than 18 inches wide at its widest point which limits you to fish of no more than 4.5 inches in length to allow suitable swimming room.

It would be best to choose fish that use all levels of the tank to ensure that all of the height is used to its full advantage, a small puffer species would work well.

yea i was thinking the same thing. i was just curious as to what some people would say. my intentions as of right now are to put some angels in with a bristlenose pleco but i havent decided on the middle dwellers yet. i wanted to school some type of fish but not sure what. thanks for the reply

Now that I'm here, your plans sound pretty good except for the "some angels". Angelfish get pretty big and should be kept either singly or in groups of 3-4. I don't think the tank is big enough for a group... at least not long term but you could start off with a group and see if any pair up and then just keep the pair. Plan on rehoming all except one or a pair to keep things peaceful.

yea thanks for the info. ive kept angels in a tank like this- it was about 3 of them and they seemed to do fine but they do get too large for the tank. thanks for the referall ill check out that info.

hmm puffer would prolly be your best bet...the spotted green puffer is a cool guy...he grows to be about the size of a large kiwi fruit...keep them in groups of 4 or 5 and you should be ok....dont mix em with gobies or anthing smaller other wise fin nippage would be a major issue

1) please be aware that the green spotted puffer is actually a brackish species and needs a heavily brackish environment once adult. they also reach approximately 6" in length, so they're considerably larger than a kiwi fruit when adult. only ONE of these would be suited for your tank.

2) of the puffer fish, only the South American Puffer is fairly suitable to a community setting and even then care must be taken when selecting tankmates. SAPs are social fish and prefer the company of their own kind; they also stay quite small (large apricot-sized). a shoal of 3-5 would be suitable for a 35g tank; heavy filtration is recommended as these are messy fish that like a strong current.
