I have a bit of a dumb question but was just wondering how columbian sharks normally behave. Mine is about 3" long and does nothing but lay at the bottom. I bought it about a month ago and am a bit worried about it. My water conditions are fine and its been eating, but its kind of pale. Whenever I see them at my LFS they are very active.

Thanks,
Sally

One shark catfish will do nothing other than mope around, except perhaps go periodically frantic if disturbed. Though these catfish are often hyped-up as "deadly predators" it is difficult to overstate just how gentle and sensitive they actually are. Firstly, they like company, and at the very least should be kept in pairs. Trios are better, and schools of dozens best of all! Secondly, they respond to the situation in the aquarium. If kept with peaceful fish, they are outgoing, but keep them with anything aggressive and they panic or try to hide. Made this mistake mixing them with triggerfish. Finally, they are, like all catfish, they have amazingly good hearing (sort of dog-level sensitivity, hearing things we can't). So if the tank is anywhere noisy, e.g., by a door that slams shut, they won't ever settle down.

In short, get your kitten a playmate or two, and check the tank is nice and peaceful.

Cheers, Neale

Thanks for the help. I will be upgrading my tank to a 125 shortly and will get another shark for it. And I keep the cat out of the fish room, just wanted to get a nice pic the other day :)

When I said "kitten" above, I meant baby catfish, not the housecat. I'm sure the housecat will do no harm to a shark catfish. In fact, if the cat was stupid enough to get the catfish out, it would get quite a nasty surprise from the powerful stings in the pectoral and dorsal fin spines.

Cheers, Neale

Sorry for the random question but is there a brackish triggerfish? What's the name?
