I want to replace my gravel with sand once my fish are healthy again ( possible velvet infestation) and I love the idea of black decor...is there such a thing as black sand?

There is however it's rather expensive. I'll try find a link for you.

It's £16.49 for a 10kg bag from Seapets...

heck that is expensive, but it might be worth it for effect thanks josh.....any luck with those holes yet?

I have black sand in my 2nd tank. It's the Unipac stuff, actually it's more dark grey than black but looks good.

I use Dennerle fine black gravel (1-2mm), which is excellent and the price is not as high as sand. As far as I know, it is ground up black rock.

I would avoid Unipack stuff because from what I have seen, Unipack dye their substrate more often than not and the dye does come off.

If you are looking for black sand, the only kind I have seen is the Tahitian Moon sand. Below is a link to it at Petsmart. I know you are in the UK, but it will give you an idea of what it looks like.

It is much more expensive. However you may want to check out ebay that is where I got mine and it was much much cheaper. Not sure what you will find on Ebay UK but worth a shot.

There is actually some of the CaribSea sand on eBay UK :)

thanks for all your replys, when i did a search it was coming up with extortionate prices per kg! thanks again

I have black sand (Tahitian Black Moon Sand) in all but 2 of my tanks (the others have a very small gravel substrate designed for plants). All of my tanks are planted, so I use a mixture of the black sand and a black substrate designed for plants made by Caribsea (Eco-Complete).

All of my cories/loaches like it and seem more comfortable and show darker colors.

I have had both the white and black sand substrates and will never use the white sand again.

Good Luck :good:

Personally, I'm going to stick to naturally coloured sand. :)

If I recall correctly some "black sands" on the market are actually iron slag and can harm sand shifters. I'd definitely look into the specific type before buying.

I use black quartz sand. It was faily reasonable as you really dont need that much of it. I have a 4ft with it in there and theres approx 10kg
