if fish dont feel pain then why to they try to get away from another fish that is nipping at them???????????
instinct?

Not that I agree... there may be no pain in the lower jaw... but if they had no pain receptors how would they feel ich or such on their skin and try to rub it off...

How's the betta doing KK? Is he looking better now that he's solo?
its doing better, fins slowly regrowing, the water is unfiltered and its a small bowl. but I guess its at peace. that betta is one tough fish, I doubt it could even be killed -_- :D

Hi KingKuba :)

It sounds to me like you're quite proud of the little guy! What's his name?

They are pretty tough. I still have a hard time accepting that mine is happier all alone in a little 1 gal tank than in my 10, 20 or 30 with other fish. One of these days I'll try to get a decent picture of him.

I'm glad to hear your fish are doing good. It is difficult to be told that what you're doing won't work for whatever reason. But I think that as long as you take that advice and start working towards getting your pets into the set-up they need to be in for life then its all good, kwim?

As the forum Moderator, I am interested in your opinion now of our "friendly site".

I am sorry you got off to a rocky start, but I am also pleased that you hung in there. It shows genuine interest.

As you have seen, many of us here take our hobby quite seriously. some are prone to react quite explosively. As long as you can understand that in some cases the loudest voices belong to those with the most passion about the hobby, all will be well.

I think many, as I did, start out this hobby as something neat to do. A cavalier attitude is seen often at the begginers level. Then after years of care, watching the personality of your fish, spending money, worrying about their welfare, and raising to the challenges they put forward, gives a person a deep sense of satisfaction.

So, Welcome to the forum.

yeah its actually regrowing slowly. how often should i change the water in the bowl, since its obviously not filtered.

Hi KingKuba :)

How big is the bowl your betta is in now? That will have some bearing on how often you change the water, but I'd suggest at least twice a week in unfiltered water. If his fins are regrowing, that's a good indication that you've probably been doing water changes.

The bowl is like 2 liters I'd say. I've been changing the water every 2 to 3 days.
