Colorful Fish

Nice idea but not really suitable as they have different water parameter needs than Endlers....the checkerboard needs quite a low PH (ideally really low 4.5 - 5.5) whereas the Endlers thrive on a higher PH of 7.5....mmmmhhh thinking caps back on...

Can i just make a suggestoin the checkerboard lyretail cichlid is suitable they are peaceful and only grow to 4 cm max
I can think of only one of the checkerboard with a lyretail, dicrossus filamentosa the females reach up to 6cm with no lyretail, the males reach up to 9cm?

We are talking about a 10 gallon aquarium so that is what I am referring to...They are far too large for a 10 gallon is what I am saying...you have to consider their territory and give the females a chance to get a break from the males...

As for aggression..yes they can get pretty aggressive it is something people should be aware of...it is like with Betta's some are more aggressive than others so again a larger tank is needed for the other fish to be able to stay out of their territory. They are also not an option for peeps who don't like some of their fish to be chased away a lot and nipped at a little...

I have lost corydoras, Neon's, Red Nosed Rummy's and Platy's to both Rams and Cacatouides and that was in 35 Gallons

So yes in my opinion Apisto's are among the more agressive fish in a community tank

Sheesh try and give a explanatory answer and I get laughed at....

If you had dwarfs killing neons - possible I'll admit, rummy's I doubt and dwarfs killing platy's thats a laugh unless there was something seriously amiss with your tank (have you ever seen a dwarf try to chase down any these fish in tank as large you state, it doesnt happen), I have NEVER seen a dwarf cichlid kill another fish in my over two years of keeping and breeding them. I have no doubt it happens but I'd say its more likly that the deaths occured because of another reason and you have blamed the dwarfs because they are cichlids and obviously aggressive. Platy's and swords are similar fish,I have seen swords kill swords and tetras not to name a few other things more likely to have killed your fish other than the cichlids in a 35g, I'd consider overcrowding was a possible an issue

So I should just stick with the Endler's?

really depends on who you are listening to, some of us said dwarfs are fine for your tank others said no, basically if I were you I'd go away and do lots lots of research on my own, different sites, maybe some books from the library and make your own choice

I'm not even going to discuss this anymore seeing everything I seem to say is a lie or laughable...after keeping aquariums for many years and never having an overcrowded tank and perfect water parameters and actually seeing the Dwarfs attack and kill the said mentioned fish...

To read up on dwarfs : Apistogramma.com or Thekrib.com

You'll pretty quickly read what is right...

I still say and stick to NO dwarfs in a 10 gallon...if you want more colour take a harem Dario Dario or Dwarf Croaking Gourami who both stay very small are fun and quirky..also don't forget your Endlers are going to multiply at a fast rate leaving less space for other fish.

hope i dont get into trouble for mentioning other forums but you seem ok so here goes...

I am a regular reader and semi regular poster on apistogramma.com for the past 18months->two years, never had any criticisim there for my stocking of tanks.

While I'm not a regular reader of thekrib.com it is in my top 5 for online research of dwarfs, my mainstay is books mainly an older book american cichlids 1 : dwarf cichlids linke/staeck and of course Baensch/Mergus Cichlid Atlas, Vol. 1 by Uwe Romer

I have had, apistogramma and mikrogeophagus happily breed in 10 and 14 gallon community tanks with no encouragement, breeding photos can be provided

Definitely too small for rams, dont know about the others, but as someone else pointed out - as endlers and these kinds of cichlids have different requirements, it's pointless arguing about who's right and wrong about stocking levels in this situation.

And even when I'm in a bitchy mood (which as folks will no doubt agree, is quite often lol), I never laugh at someone's experience (especially when they've lost fish - that's just plain rude) - just because it's never happened to you - doesn't mean it's never happened. As pointed out to me the other day, 2 years is nothing compared to the experience some of these members have - and just because it hasn't happened yet, doesn't mean it wont ever ;)

Most killifish are pretty small and have nice colorings though they are not cichlids. I also agree with the GBR's.

killifish can get quite aggresive though. but the yare cool fish
