What is an effective treatment for collumanus? I've read several things and need to figure out what med to purchase tomorrow. One of the angels I rescued recently has very short noticeable red worms protruding from its anus. I moved it into my empty ten gallon tank for the time being. Its the only one exhibiting any kind of symptom - it's been lagging on the bottom of the tank for a few days and not eating. It's also quite smaller than the other angel (I took these from a friend who couldn't care for them about 1.5 months ago); they were purchased separately but until very recently were almost identical in size). The other is still growing and is about 4" tall now... will need to be re-homed again in the near future. But, that's not what I need to worry about at the current moment.

Here's what I found on collumanus treatment, via Google.

I keep reading that a lot of meds aren't really effective against it. I'd like to nip it in the bud if there's a chance the other fish might have it. Is levamisole hydrochloride effective? A google search suggested that; and also something called Panacur (Fenbendazole) as another. A closer look suggests that these are actually medications for livestock or a dog. Also, that these have a tendency to take lives as well in curing them (the worms are treated but may not pass from the fish).

If anyone can be of any help finding a medication please say something =) I'll be calling a fish store tomorrow one way or another.

Thank you!!

PS - I know I post occasionally and typically don't respond much, it's not that I don't appreciate the help & suggestions but I get extremely busy and don't have time at all to write back. This is a great site & forum and I've learned a lot. A year ago I tried to start an aquarium knowing nothing about cycling etc and now I have three tanks well maintained, as well as a group of (healthy, to the best of my knowledge anyway) fish that I've had for going on seven months now. =)

Go with the levamisole. It is a cattle wormer, but works effectively on fish.

A livestock & farm supply outlet such as Farm & Fleet would carry it, if you don't have one nearby you can order it online. The proper dose for fish takes a little math, but it isn't anything impossible.

In the US, I believe Macaryn one and Macaryn Two are also used for Columnaris .

Are they? I'm reading that they're for mostly bacterial infections. I have some and can try it but I'm not finding anything about it being used for collumanus.

I called around to local stores and none of them have the levamisole by either of its common names in any kind of form - one store was a livestock store. It looks like I'm back to the drawing board. I'll have to look around when I go out tomorrow.

If this is the only visibly affected fish, should I treat the entire main tank?

Minxy is talking about Columnaris, a bacterial infection, and you are talking about Cammallanus, a type of parasitic nematode. lol

hehe, I just presumed a spelling mistake  Minx naughty, must read full thread

I wasn't able to get levamisole in any form - I called the livestock supply place nearby and they searched all around for it for me. I have to special order it. Or order it online.

I have treated both tanks with the appropriate dosage of Parasite Clear in hopes that it may prevent the other fish from being affected, and possibly kill the collumanus in the affected angel fish. I'm not expecting a perfect result with it. It will be fed tonight and hopefully will have an appetite.

I think I am going to wait and see if there are any changes from here on out.

In a lot of countries you need to consult a vet to be able to get Levamisole.

If you could check your spelling for the disease because you have written "collumanus" and it is kind of confusing. There is a bacterial disease called columnaris, and the parasitic worms called camallanus.

Make sure you remove the carbon (if you have any) from the filter before you treat. Be careful as some medications can affect catfish and loaches if overdosed.
