Hi, a friend is thinking about keeping some fish in a bowl and he is wondering what fish as suitable for coldwater other than goldfish? I know this question has most likly been asked hundreds of times!!!

I have heard white clouds can cope with unheated aquariums, but is there any others? A bloke in the local fish shop said that danios and possible guppies might be about to cope in an unfilter, unheated bowl. Is this true?

Thanks foe any advise you can give

no he is trying to sell you fish.
sadly there are far too many unethical retailers out there that will tell you anything to get a sale.

personaly I think the only thing suitable for (so called) goldfish bowls are flowers.
if your friend is insistant on having a fish in a bowl (which BTW was banned in Italy last year)
he should have one, and I mean one, fantail/veiltail goldfish that would need to be rehomed within a few months to a bigger
enviroment.

best tell him to stick some flowers in it and buy a proper aquarium. :good:

If your friend is only interested in plunking a poor goldfish into a one gallon bowl to live out the rest of his miserable days, then he or she isn't interested in fish to begin with. Impulse pet buyers are the worst kind of people, IMHO. And the bloke in the lfs is truly a sorry git indeed. Tell him I said so. Tell him I suggest he find another line of work...like street sweeping.

I have seen a fish shop trying to sell plecs, danios and white clouds as coldwater fish!! However danios and white clouds will survive in coldwater but its not their ideal conditions. Goldfish are the best, although non will do well in a bowl!!

Fancy Goldfish are coldwater fish but prefer slightly warm water in the winter and they wouldn't survive in a non filtered tank as they are far to sensitive.

Goldfish are coldwater and they are the best cold water fish. And never add a fish in a bowl coz it not enought for it.

A goldfish of any kind will suffer and die in a bowl and very quickly. They produce vast amounts of waste and in such a small volume of water it would likely poison itself with ammonia within a couple of days. Goldfish can grow over a foot long and live for over ten years - they do not belong in bowls.

In a warm room of stable temperature you might be able to keep a single betta in it, if you changed some of the water at least twice a week and fed it carefully. Better yet grow a plant in the bowl and buy a 10 gallon tank and have some guppies/betta/one fancy goldfish.

Thanks for the info. I kind of figured this would be the case, my friend currently cant afford an aquarium and he really does like fish. I'll let him know what you have all said.

Thanks again

Jon
