Coldwater 20 Gal Planted Tank?

Can someone help me out? I would like to plant my tank this month so it is not heated, and it has natraul light, and I have 3 goldies. What plants would you recommend?

Canadian Duckweed ( Elodea Densa ) is one that I am sure will do well in un-heated tanks, it also actes as a very good water-purifier... Just shop around ( online I mean ) and you will find that many plants can survive and sometimes flourish in low-light, un-heated envirements...

Such aquatic websites include Plants Alive, Aquaessentials, etc...

BTW you might find the gold fish eat most types of plant so might be a case of try and see.

Neither did I! The tropica website is excellent, if you do the advanced search there a load of criteria you can chose, such as height, native region, light requirement, etc. I just copied and pasted, worth a look if you're after something specific.

I would like to ask...... I would like to go out to the lfs and get some plants is there anything that I have to do? How do I install them?

Most you just push into the gravel and let them be but let us know what you get any we'll see if that's the case for the ones you get, cos they aren't all like that.

I think I might get this, Ceratophyllum demersum 'Foxtail', but if the store does not have it I'll find something else.......

Haha you chose one of only a very few plant that you dont actually 'plant' Ceratophyllum demersum or hornwort doesn't produce roots so it wont stay in the substrate if you plant it, you can push it in like a stem plant but after time like float out, so you constantly have to replant it.

Ha Ha. Well The store employee was like the plants we have here are good for goldfish they love to eat them... I was like well I don't want them to eat them and she was like well you can use Anacharis (sp.) but you will have to replace it every month. I left cuz I guess they didn't have the plant I was looking for. So another day I will go To the other LFS I know of.

I've got a 30gal coldwater planted aquarium, I just have gigantic vallis, java fern, moss balls and java moss - they never seem to be munched by our black moore or the 4 young goldfish.

The temp is kept between 15-20 degrees and I use root sticks to help the vallis spread all over the place.

I've heard those onion bulb vallis like plants are good for coldwater too, although I've yet to see them used in an aesthetically pleasing way.

Also, apparently both java fern and moss taste bitter and are unlikely to be eaten - plus both of these plants can make your tank look stunning if used correctly.

According to my experience, gold fish will eat most plants, esp those with soft stem. Java Fern seems fine, they do not like its taste, and it is very hardy and attractive plants B)

I have a planted goldfish tank, I make sure there is lots of duckweed in it they eat that and leave the other plants alone.
