Has anyone ever tried crossing Gambusia affinis with Guppies or know of this ever having been done? Gambusia affinis is your standard misquito fish here in northern california and in many other places, and can stand cold temperatures. I have some out in my pond. The thing is they are colorless unless you look close, where you'll see they have a yellowish green tint. The females look almost just like female guppies from the side, but not so much from the top, and they tend to have tiny black spots on their tails.

The idea is to cross the misquito fish with either standard feeder guppies or fancy guppies so that the resulting fish will have colors, and be able to withstand the winters here. It get's to be down to 30?F in the air during the winter here. I assume the water temp would be about the same. We do ocassionaly get ice above the water, but rarely more than a quarter inch at the top.

all i can suggest is putting a couple female guppies in with a male mosquito fish.if they can breed-they will. :) i had wondered about crossing the two myself.

EDIT...
Re-read yor post.
I do not recommend putting fish that are not native to your homeland in a pond.Unless it is a small pond that is in a controlled enviroment.
