Coconut Caves

Wow! This is a great idea & I need a nice little cave for my fish tank, so i'll be giving this a try. I do like the idea of using the java moss. All of my plants are plastic, and I don't have any kind of special lighting (just overhead florescent & lunar lighting for the evening). Could I use Java Moss without special lighting?
Don't worry, you don't need any special lighting for Java Moss, it'll grow in just about any set-up :) :good:

Thanks RESGuy! Can't wait to get started on this project then...I'm headed to the grocery store anyways today. :)

yeah, the java moss is a good idea.... it looks good when done right! as for lighting..... you won't need anything special, I've got lots of plants in a tank with a set up that sounds a bit like yours.... I'm sure you will have no problem.....

You are welcome :)
Here is a good link on Java Moss:

And a link on starting an Easy Planted Tank:

Even if you don't want a plants only tank, that second link has some great tips on easy to grow plants :)

I have two coconut caves, made from the same coconut. I used a hack saw to cut it in half, and then sawed off one end for the opening. One of them is covered in java moss, which I like the look of on it. One thing I can say is I would suggest pulling off the stringy parts of the husk, unlike the person in the linked article said. I have spoken to people who have had problems with it rotting after a time, and their moss floating away with it. Sounds like a mess. I pulled it off of mine to start with and have had no problems with rotting, release of tannins, or anything else. They've been in there for six or eight months so far, I think.

Coconuts are designed to fall of the tree and float around in the ocean for extended periods of time, they're practically pre-built water features :D
