Anyone know where I can order coarse sand online? I'm looking for either a very, very fine gravel or coarse sand (more coarse than tahitian moon sand).

I have playsand in my 38 gallon and I just do not like it. It's much too fine for my liking. The heater, plants, bogwood are always covered in a fine dusting (mostly due to the cories stirring it up.)

I bought a very small amount of this stuff from the LFS a long time ago and they do not carry it anymore. It's great because it's not dusty and does not get stirred up like playsand yet it has that nice look of sand and is easy to clean (It does not compact either.)

Here is a picture of what it looks like:

i don't know of much stores that will ship sand as it is very heavy. I know big al's does ship sand but it's the expensive variety.

Maybe pool filter sand would be coarse enough for you?

"Dowell" brand aquarium gravel manufactures what is called "River Bed Sand". It is a coarse type sand natural in color that does not compact and settles nicely as well. Dowell must be pretty popular, I have not been into a fish/aquarium store in the states of PA, OH, WV, or MD that did not carry it.

I had been using this in tanks for years, but I have not seen it for a while. I made an inquiry about a year ago and was told it could be ordered in for me. Good luck.

Maybe try DIY/garden centres? They seem to do loads of different grades of sand/gravel for all different uses.
