i want to find out how u sex rams and i thought u would know maybe ..... i look on websites and they are sugesting that my tow rams are both males despte me asking the lfs person to get me a male and a female but i havn't got the heart to take it back just in case i am wrong....... i mena they both have simalar chrateristics but the smaler one has a redish tummy but its to young to be mature female.......... these rams are about the length of guppythe smaller one is about 1 cm smaller....... i always loved rams and i finally have two yay!!! but i did want a male and female pleaes help find out if the female is a female or male!!! please

on a mature male, the 3rd dorsal fin is (much) longer depending on age, female is tiny bit fatter and red tummy!

It can be difficult to tell in very young fish but as mentioned the male will have a longer dorsal fin and will be larger.

Male
The male will have long black colored 'spikes' extending vertically out from the tip of the dorsal closest to the head.
The dorsal is most often pointed at the tip facing the caudal fin.
The male is larger; the pelvic fins are larger.

Female
The female will have a pinkish colored pelvic region.
The dorsal is rounded at the end.
I don't think the males ever have a pink tummy. If you want tons of info on rams check out this link:

if u look at the tow pics of the ram at the top of the web page not the very top but there will be a ram with a pinky tummy and looks like a male

I saw the pic you were talking about. The one on the left is definitely female. Pink belly and no spike on dorsal fin. The one on the right is male. It has the spike in the 2nd dorsal fin and the larger pelvic fins. My males and also the ones in the photo have larger pelvic fins with black coloring on them. From you original post it sounds like you have one male and one female. Could you post a pic of your fish I think that would be the only way for someone else to tell.

I am so sorry for the long delay in getting back to you.

From talking with a few breeders I know who keep and breed rams they say basically the same as all the replies here.

They also said it is very hard to sex out even young adult rams at times.

My best advice is to continue to watch them and look for the signs the great members here have already given.

I have also reviewed several of my referrence books, but not to much difference in the advice already given.

Keep us posted and by all means if you can get a few pics up do so. It would make sexing them much easier.

Unfortually i don't have acesss to a ditigel camera or any other sort of camera aprt from throw away ones lol but my suspected female looks nearly extaly like the picture in the rams page ........ its the two pics of rams one has apink tummys ? slash redy tummy plzzz check out the website i might try and post the pic in the pictures thing forum but i am not very good with pc's ohwell thnx everyone!!! o also what would tow males rams behave like cos they aren't doing much fightimng or showing offf or anything they seems to be getting along with each other!!!
