Are they adults or babies - if they are adults, did you buy them as a breeding pair?

If they are babies (like mine) then the most dominant one will turn into the female - like most marriages really

If adults and you have not bought a pair - well, you could be lucky if one is smaller than the other

Keep in mind that some pairs never breed in tanks and some pairs do all the time. Seem hit and miss maybe? From what I've read anyway.

they are medium size about 1inch or so, A. Ocellaris. i had them for 3 weeks so far. also, is it true in a 30gal tank it is safe to have a total of 4 of these fish??

No, it's not true

You need a pair or a large (100g +) tank and 8+ This is because the most dominant pair of fish will gang up on all the others. If there isn't a large group of "others" they will get killed one at a time untill just the dominant pair remain  You need a large tank for 8 active fish, hence 100g +

All the best

I got 4 clown loaches I have had them about 2 weeks now and I have been reading up on everything I can find on this species I think there fantastic I got a question?

seffieuk You stated I Quote
"If they are babies (like mine) then the most dominant one will turn into the female"

Is this really true ? and on what fact do you base this statement on as I have read from many sources although all clown loach groups have an Alpha fish I have yet not read that it will definitely be the female?
I have read it could be either sex.

Further more the sexing of a clown loach is complex and it is questioned by many if the caudal fin difference is a reliable way of verifying sex and that it is considered that in a group the only way to identify a female is females appear to be fuller bodied? This statement is based on research I have studied so far .

I do not write this to cause animosity but in genuine interest as i want to learn all about the clown loach (Botia macracanthus.)

Ummm......they are discussing Clown Fish, as in Finding Nemo, not Clown Loaches.

i dunno if they are a pair they were together with a few others at my LFS. i figured i'd get just two of them see what happens. they are the kind of the same size but one is slightly biger not by much. i didn't get them for breeding really, whatever happens i guess :)

Well it will take them a while to establish whihc one is dominant then, if they came from a group. When LFS keep groups of clowns they are usually juvvies which means it will take a while for them to reach maturity. So dont expect anything soon.

you are right they are juvies, how long does it take them to be full size, or is that dapended on what i feed them and how often?

i dont know how long i will take, one of my clowns is still a juvvie. Had them about 5 months now id guess. I know of clowns that didnt start spawing for 4 or 5 years. Some never do. Also read about peoples clowns that have done it within a few months...dont know how old those guys were.
