Does anyone elses hide when lights are on? Mine always hide and i only ever see them early in the morning when its getting light outside and when I do see them one of them always goes to one same corner of the tank and just stays there motionless.

Are they quite new?

I have polka dot loaches, and they were shy for the first few weeks. Even now I rarely see all six at the same time. They do spend a lot of time hiding, but a group of 3-4 will play around a lot of the time too.

I rehomed 3 early dec 2012 ever since they have been hiding, then got another 3 smaller ones  a month later 1. And to my suprise as Im writing this all five are now out and about with the one hanging around in the corner again.

What kind of hiding places do you have for them? The more hiding places the safer they will feel to come out during the day. also tank size and other things can come into play with them hiding also. just a thought :)

Clowns need to be in groups, the bigger the better. Too few and they behave as you initially described. They also feel most secure when they have places they can flee to and hide should they feel the need.

I did have 6 clown but one died. I have  two caves made out of slate one of these the plec occupies and the other one I think lets to much light in so they dont go in there much. I then have a large fake hollow log which they also dont use, then I have a small fake hollow log and they all cram into this for some strange reason. I also have a ruin ornament and one of them is excavating the sand underneath it.

They do love to cram in together. I have seen them fit into a space i do not think I could have put them into even using a mallet and oil. They do tend to be in and out though. They hide a while then are out a while and then back again. Sometimes they sleep out in the open and sometimes they sleep in hiding.

This is the one that always stays in this spot when s/he is out, never moves. Only when s/he goes back to hiding does s/he move.
