hello everyone.I was wondering do you get 2 types of clown loach, because I have seen them sold seperatly in the stor, some small and some HUGE.

thanks

chris :hyper:

Only one type of clown loach. But because they are slow growers some shops sell both 'small' and 'large' options.
Small are just younger versions of the large.

So it says on the care sheet that they need 55 gallons at least. Is that true?

55 Gal is the minimum for a group of young clowns.
The average recommended tank for a young group is 4ft long and 55 Gal in volume.

They will however need an upgrade overtime as they grow. And eventually require 6ft + tanks to be kept both comfortably and safely. They are large bodied fish which create lots of waste, so the extra volume is needed to dilute this waste down to a managable level.

Absolutely agree with curiosity101 :good:

I was actually told there is a 'variation' of Clown Loaches. Not big/small, but half barred (not sure if this is the correct term). Most clown loaches there is a bar in the middle joins all round the body,on some this bar stops where it almost joins, they are meant to be more valuable.

There must be someone here who can expand further on what I'm talking about, cos I'm not too sure myself, anyway just thought I'd add that to the thread.

Thanks, I am aware they are the same species.

Anyway, does anyone know the correct terminology for these half-barred clown loaches? Can't find much on the net.

I see what your getting at now holidayinn well I think I do

There are variations on Clown Markings and the more obscure are more sort after but I think you will find this is down to the parents of the fish causing slight genetic variations however there is another factor that one should take into account with there markings and that is were they come from.

The Clown Loaches you find in most LFS come from two main areas Borneo and Sumatra however you may find some that originate from Kalimantan. Due to geographic separation there is a distinct difference in there appearance.

Using the word distinct maybe a little over the top maybe a better word would be subtle :good:

This article is very interesting I recommend you give it a read: http://www.loaches.c...king-variations

I hope this is what you were on about and helps

Thanks Onebto, that is very valuable information!

I think the clowns I was referring to are classed as 'saddle' Clown loaches, but I didnt know there were so many variations or how they cam about.

Again, many thanks for providing this info.
