Hi

I have a number of tanks, and in my biggest tank I have 2 clown loach, the tank has always been snail free, I have another tank....which snails are taking over in, only have a couple of mollies, 2 guppies ,2 corydora and a dwarf gourami in, I had thought about buying a couple of clown loach for it, as I read somewhere that clown loach eat snails, but the tank which is overun by snails is 96 litre so perhaps not big enough for 2 clown loach? Would this be correct thinking? If so.....

Are there any other type of fish that would eat snails?

I have tried different products to remove snails, but it hasn't worked, have tried floating lettuce on the top, to attract the snails and although it has, it has not got rid of them, and they are beginning to drive me mad, may aswell take the fish out and let the snails have the tank..lol.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Debbie

I am not an expert, but i do know loaches are famous for removing snails. Clowns however get way to big for that tank i am afraid, go to loaches.com and check some out and be aware of sizes.

smaller, relatively peaceful snail eating loaches are

zebra loach (b. striata) - 4"
yoyo loach (b. almorhae) - 5"
angelicus loach ...or a bunch of other names (b.kubotai) - 5"
dwarf chain loach (y. sidthimunki) - 2.5"

All do best in groups of at least 4 or 5 of the same species.

kuhlis are also supposed to help, but I've heard reports they primarily eat eggs and not adult snails. I've no personal experience.

The kuhli loach thing would make sence because they are really small and i dont know that they would eat a snail unless it was the egg or egg size, mind u kuhli loaches are still a wonderful looking loach and neat to have.

Hmm well just been to my LFS and seen something similar to these...but they were a different name and I cannot remember the name as it was very long.....they were £7.99 each....very small...but am sure it said they grow to 15 cm? I am tempted to go back and get a couple but think if they are not the same, I might end up with some monsters in my tank..lol

Humbug Catfish...I was rushing about so didnt have time to get any, and on ringing the store up later in the day...and getting to speak to the dumbest girl in the shop...I asked what name they had on the tank that I saw these fish and she said....Acanthadorus? Have googled the name she gave me but am still no wiser...either that or I am being as dumb as her...lol I do not think she knew which I meant...even though I explained where they were and how much they were selling them for! I am unsure about getting them if they will grow big...as you said they didnt grow that big?

acanthodoras spinossissimus is the one i have but there are different types they dont grow big!

only grow to 5" maximum and are one of the most peacefull fish i know! :good:

Ok well I now know what it is as I have just bought 2...lol.....its a striped Raphael Catfish....not sure if it will eat the snails, but what the heck, they are fantastic looking and I could not resist getting them!

Thanks for your help.
