without getting into an arguement what are the best conditions to keep clown loach in? there seems to be a great deal of debate as to what size tank they can be kept in and dont know about everyone else but im confused! i know they grow big but cant they be rehomed once that size?

Yoyo loaches are a completely different issue altogether from clown loaches, since they remain much smaller.

Laura, imo, the best conditions to keep clown loaches would be in the wild where they belong! :p

It's quite impossible to get a "best set-up", since different fishkeepers will feel differently about it. It's probably agreeable that they should be kept in schools, in large tanks, and with plenty of hiding spots.

I don't claim to be a yoyo loach expert, but i don't see why not. They stay around 4 inches, so as long as your tank isn't overstocked, it should be fine.

ok, can you keep some yoyo loaches in a 30 US gallon tank?

yoyos reach 8"
I have two that are 7+" and two that are 6"

Sorry, I feel I say this every day on one forum or another :/

ok thanks, I didnt mean to steal the thread. Lets get back to talking about Clown Loaches. I want to get some of those in the future in a bigger tank and want to learn about them.

Wolf, perhaps you have a hybrid of some sort ? I've never seen any over 6" and all references on a vast variety of what I find on the web says the are between 4 and 6 inches. Not a single reference (I can find) states a size larger than 6 " :dunno:

Theres something odd I'm noticing about yo-yo loaches. All the ones I see that are large specimens seems to have a distinctly different patterning on their bodies. Almost as if there are two strains of the same loach similar to the way there are two strains of pictus cats.

I have a 4 inch+ yo-yo who's side markings still distincly say YO YO YO down it's side. Whereas most of the large ones seem to have a pattern that looks nothing like the word yo yo yo and doesn't even look like it was stretched from the original marking. I'm wondering if it's a different strain or just another morph similar to how the histronica and rostrata loaches seem to be morphs from the origina lochata.

We have 8 clown loaches, they are very slow growers, although with that said the larger the tank the better, Lfs's around are area are full of fish people have brought back for one reason or another, mostly size.

They will find it very hard to rehome these fish if they ever do at all.

They have a big tank full of large clowns, bala sharks, tin foil barbs, silver dollars etc.....

I really believe some should be done about the sale of these fish that get so large, as they are very easy fish to get hold of and are very appealing when small.

>>> ones I see that are large specimens

The markings on "Yo-Yo" loaches, (I still find it odd calling them that after calling them Pakistani Loaches for over 30 years!), are highly variable and change as they grow.

It is no suprise to me that seeing a juvenile and an adult in adjacent tanks, one could believe they were different species. If you have grown juveniles to adulthood, it seems quite normal.

Clown Loaches, indeed most loaches, grow quickly to about half their full size then slow down. Getting that last 25mm can take a couple of years.
