Hi, as asked above has anyone breed any in an aquarium? How big are they usually when they are mature enough to breed in an aquarium?
Does anyone know anyone who is selling or actually got a breeding pair of clown loach?

Thanks

Hi, as asked above has anyone breed any in an aquarium? Simply NO! there have been one or two claims but no evidence

How big are they usually when they are mature enough to breed in an aquarium? It is believed that they need to reach the age of 7 years before they become mature enough to breed but with no evidence as mentioned before who knows?

Does anyone know anyone who is selling or actually got a breeding pair of clown loach? I am afraid not If there was a captive breeding pair they would be EXTREMELY valuable.

Thanks

Just found this apparantley a couple of farms have used hormones to breed clown loach here is the link: http://www.loaches.com/articles/clown-loach-breeding-related-items

Thanks, I will have a look at the link.
I thought that someone has breed these by now by people who have huge monster tanks. If I had the money I would try to make a setup just right for them to breed.

I agree it should be time someone achieved it without using hormones but then again Clown Loaches live in Rivers I guess you would have to reproduce the river conditions they like to spawn in. Plus you got to get them mature first which I guess is a job in its own and it is not easy to sex a Clown Loach. I am sure a reputable and documented breeding will take place one day we will just have to see how long it will take

To breed with out hormones will take a lot of work!

I've already got valid milt from 5" male fish but getting the females to rippen is a nightmare.

Hormones is the only reliable way to go with these fish unless you have a large system and can control every thing to find what the main breeding triggers are. I.E.

  • Photo period
  • Temperature
  • Flow rates
  • Oxygen levels
  • Amount of food
  • etc etc

You'd think that someone would of studied them to death in their own habitat by now to find out something like this.

Hi Nelly just got BB connected so back on line :)

I'm sure people have have studied them not never seen any paper work on them
The collectors just go out and collect young fish in their 1000's to export.
Or Singapore breed millions now which make them alot easier to export, and don't want other people to farm them.

The person who I bought my most recent clownie additions off claimed that a friend of theirs had a monster clown loach tank and some big (10") specimens in there. Evidently his cleaning fell by the wayside, so the bottom got very 'silty' but the one thing he kept up with was his filter maintenance, so there was a good flow in the tank and one day they looked in and saw a few tiny little baby clowns in there - deduced that they must have bred at some point! Which is very exciting if true!

From what I can gather, it's mostly about getting a good water current in the tank, and mimicking the river bed for the bottom of the tank. I've also read somewhere that feeding live food (guppies etc) can prepare the females for spawning.

I'm switching over to almost a clown loach only tank and have some nice big fish at around 7" so I'm just going to enjoy my tank, keep up the water flow, feed them all well and hope that one day they might just breed for me :p
We're lucky in that the females of every other species of loach we've had in our tank have become gravid very quickly after reaching sexual maturity so I don't know what we do (I should probably make note of the key factors though for future reference) but something about the conditions in our tank, or perhaps what we feed, makes female loaches fill with eggs so if clown loaches are anything similar to yoyo or zebra loaches in their requirements then we might stand some small chance!

I'm mostly about enjoying watching them though, so I'm not fussed either way. I love watching them swim up to the filter outlet to enjoy the current :p It would be an absolutely amazing experience though - to breed clown loaches in the aquarium.

I believe they do have to be in reasonably large social groups to breed though, so a 'breeding pair' is not very true, in reality. I doubt you could sell a breeding pair of clown loaches and have them just get on with it in any old tank with other random fish.

Thanks for the links and will read last 2 links soon. I really want to do this project of breeding clowns, I think if someone who can afford a big marine tank would be the best budget to be at for this.
What type of environment do clown loach live in and where do they come from? Does someone have a link of a video showing their natural habitat in the big Ocean or sea and how they live, it would be really good to watch.
