I am going to convert my freshwater tank into a marine tank and been thinking of stocking ideas.

I was thinking of 2 clowns, a royal gramma and a 6line wrasse and a cleaner shrimp which is about my limit

my question is whether its best to have 2 clowns or it ok for just the 1?
in my lfs they have a pair and a single....the pair swim around but the single hides a lot...is it because its on its own?

getting one would enable one more small fish but dont mind getting 2 to see the best of them?

so which is best?

if its the 14G in your signature... then one at most and this is only for small species such as ocellaris and perculas. Bigger species will outgrow this tank. I think a royal grama would work, but I dont a sixline would work either as they are very active fish and can be territorial even though they don't grow to be too large.

Look into some smaller gobies and inverts as additional sotcking. Maybe a firefish as well

thanks for your reply

it is my 14g and it would be the smaller kind

i do really like the 6 line wrasse a lot so if possible could you give me some more information about your opinion

i do like the purple firefish idea though....could you please tell me if 1 clown, 1 purple firefish, 1 royal gramma, 1 6line wrasse and 1 cleaner shrimp is ok stocking?

As this post is in the section nano reef, I must say again that I think that 2 smaller clowns are ok in 14g even if most people say that 20g should be the minimum but I would consider, too, that the more fish and other bigger eaters like shrimps you got in there the more unstable is the whole thing.

If you get a power outage your livestock will survive much longer without powerheads when they are only a few.

Algae problems are far more likely with a high stocking density, too. That might not be a problem in a fish only tank, but with corals you have to fight the algae and that costs time.

I have seen that my pico is far more stable regarding ph swings and the like and has no algae at all. It doesn't make much work in contrary to the nano. Reason is that far less food enters the pico.

Far too many fish for a 14 gallon. 2 fish max. I would do a Clown and a Six line. Royal grammas can get MEAN and in that small of a tank definitaly it will happen quick. Maybe a clown goby too. Just thought I'd give some advice.
