lowestoft,
hello
i got my first saltwater fish which are 2 clown fish( i think they are Amphiprion ocellaris) and they get along fine during the day no fighting and they are hardly ever far from eash other but when i turn the lights out they both swim to the same corner of the tank and they seem to be having a lttle fight they dont seem to be gettin hert by each other no ripped fins and it not violent at all was just wondering if its normal there only been in the tank for 5 days so i think its a territorial thing but not sure
thanks

p.s i would like to thank everyone on this forum that has helped me in anyway to get this tank started
i would definatly recommened this forum to any one of my m8s thanks again :good:

I wouldn't worry too much about it. Clownfish are odd. They're probably still sorting out dominance.

thanks for help m8 ill keep an eye on them make sure it dont get to violent how long can it take to sore out dominance or is it one of them things that dont have a time limit it just happens?

It depends. They'll probably always bicker at each other, but isn't that what all couples do?

I just have one clown fish .... he always stays near the top of tank, I'm wondering if he is getting enough oxygen. I have a 10 gallon tank with about 100 gallons per hour passing through the filter. the water level is about 1/2 inch below the filter .... (I don't like a lot of bubble/water/trickle noises. ) Am I insane for worrying about this? This filter is an Aqua Clear 50, but I have it turned down to midway flow.

Maybe I need to lower the water level (there is a glass top on the tank ) .... He doesn't gasp for air (at least not as far as I can tell). Maybe he is just acting strange because he needs a friend in the tank. (I'm going to get another clown fish in three or four days).

I wish that I could test for oxygen .... but I can't.

The other thing I want to add is that I've only seen him sleep once .... I've had him for four days and he seem to stay up most -- or all of the night.

If you're not seeing him gasping or having rapid breathing, I wouldn't worry too much about it. He's still new to the tank, give him time to settle in. I believe Seffie stated in another post "Clownfish don't act 'normal' when alone", which is very accurate. They act completely different when in a pair. As for the sleeping thing... Clownfish don't really settle in and "sleep" in a sense like other fish like wrasses or gobies do. IME they stay in a spot and basically hover there all night long or mine (which host a coral) still continue to swim around in their coral all night long. Prior to hosting, they always slept at the top of the tank making splashing noises all night long... scared me half to death more than once that they had jumped out.

hello
so tonight my clown fish started fighting really bad they started off with doing some vibration shake at each other 1 did it once the other did it 2 then they started fighting violently and they finshed with locking there mouths they did this bout 3 times and stopped they seem to be gettin on alright now is this normal

Shaking is normal pairing behavior. After that... I'm unsure without seeing it for myself. Just continue to keep a close eye on them.

yer they are bout they same size one might be a little bigger but nothing noticable they only fight at night they dont do it during the day the get aone really well but as soon as the lights go off they both go to the same corner they havent been in the tank very long only a week so it might be a territorial thing or a dominance thing but im not to sure on this

about how big are they?
did they come from teh same tank or two seperate ones?
if they were in seperate ones - where they on their own? or with other clowns? where each one the biggest out of the other clowns?

yes they came from the same tank when there not that big between about 1.5 inch to 2inchs there one with not a full middle stripe and i would say its a little bigger than the other but not much bigger but the one with the full stripe in the middle seems to do the shakey thing more than the other when they do fight and its only at night they fight i never seen them fight during they day and they stay together all day and even at night after they finish fighting
