how much clove oil should u use.....my fish is in a small container at the moment..or do i just keep addings drops till he stops breathing?

Yes, keep adding drops until your fish goes to sleep... once he does, use another method of euthanasia to fully kill him.

:rip: fishie. If you don't mind me asking, what's wrong with the fish in question?

this is the method I have used
Buy pure clove oil. You can get it at a health food store. Put the fish in a medium sized mixing bowl in his own water from his tank. In a small jar or something with a lid, such as a jam jar, mix the clove oil with tank water. Put the lid on and shake it like crazy over and over until the liquid in it is white. Then pour a little into the mixing bowl with the fish. Swirl it with your hand. The fish might fight it just a little bit and then slow down. Then pour a little more in and swirl again. He should just go to sleep and appear dead. If he doesn't, try a little more of the clove solution, always shaking very well before an addition to the bowl. When he goes to sleep, leave him in the solution for a good 30 minutes.
Pain free death. Very humane. We should all go so easily.

as for the ammount of oil, 1 to 10 of tank water.

yea im asking just in case..u see the story is this.....a while ago i had this mollie in my big tank, i came down one morning to find him swimming strangly on his side so i took him out and put him in a different tank..he's grown a bit since then but has always had this problem...sometimes he swims normally other times he swims on his side...he seems pretty healthy considering...he can also do head first 360 degree spins which it rather strange..and this morning i came down to him sorta rolling over and over and i thought it was the end...but i left him for a while and he went back to normal...so ...just incase is it comes to the end thats why i asked....

Mollies are brackish water fish....they really do need some salt in their water. Too many shops tell you that they are born in fresh water, so they will be fine in fresh water, but in my experiences, something like what you have just described is what always happened to my mollies before I started keeping them in brackish water.

Is there any visible damage to his fins? Perhaps the pectorals.....

they do have salt in there water, and there is no damage to his fins.....he looks toatlly normal..or should i say 'she'...

Dorkhedos, I wouldn't call that humane... but I assume you're only joking. :/

I've always heard the best way to kill a fish is to put it in an airtight plastic bag with no water or air and seal it. then stick the poor little guy in the freezer.

Personally I think the clove oil method is best, as long as once the fish goes to sleep, you properly kill it with another method.

Hmm, freezing is a very painful way to go. So is shooting. Clove oil is probably fastest and least painful for your fish, but somehow I don't think I could ever kill one of my fish. Its a matter of personal preferance I guess. I'd just feel too guilty, thinking maybe it could have made it. See the euthanasia pinned topic for humaine and not humaine ways to put your fish down. And remember proper disposal of the body.

Hi...much to the disagreement of many people here, I have to state that I think that freezing cold is the most humane way to euthanize a fish. Rapid immersion in an ice cold bath, with a fish...will cause rapid unconsciousness and death. Clove oil does not cause unconsciousness immediately..it IS an anesthetic, will numb, but as a post states above, will not immediately stop life function. Cold is still used today for doing minor operative procedures since numbing stops neural signals....you can make an incision in someone's skin painlessly when the skin is rapidly cooled (we use ethyl chloride). Many humans who have survived freezing state there is a period of euphoria. Placing the fish in a freezer is not the way to go....air acts as an insulator and this is slow. Rapid immersion in cold water causes almost instantaneous unconsciousness and death. It is the loss of consciousness that is the human way of ending the animals life. You are literally flipping off the switch. Adding salt to the water will reduce the temperature even further. Which ever method you used, the thought that you are trying to help your animal is the most important thing. Good luck. SH

THANK YOU. I never thought about using ice water. would you just put them straight in the water or would you put them in an airless plastic bag so they can't breath either.
