Hi my sister in law has a tank and it has been fine for the last few weeks but it has now become cloudy, very cloudy. What could this be due to? And what action should she take to correct the problem? Cheers all :)

You say it has been fine for a couple of weeks..is this a new setup? If so the cloudy water is more than likely a bacterial bloom which is quite normal and will clear on its own in a few days.

Could be either an algae or a bacteria bloom.

Tell her to cut down on her feeding, once every 2 days is PLENTY for any fish. Also tell her to cut down the ammount of time her lights are on. Cut it down to about 6 hours a day. This along with a 50% water change should get you on your way to cutting down the "bloom"

Yes it is a new tank set up. I will let her know about the feeding and light advice, im goin there later today so will try to help, is cloudy water quite commen in new tanks then?

Oscars will feed based on however they have been brought up, and as you'd expect, most oscars get fed VERY well when growing up, so they grow fast and big!

depends on why it's cloudy.... the simple fact the water is less transparent doesn’t, but the reason why it's less transparent might.
