Hello everyone,

Not been around for ages, which I guess shows my tank has been functioning perfectly!

It’s just turned 4 years old in the last few days and suddenly the water seems to have got cloudy and I can't clean it up.

I have tried a massive water change, approx 60% but no joy. Have added a chemical to capture the gloom, but still no joy. 2 days in darkness, nothing.....

My stats are fine and no fish have been lost yet...

I have a horrible feeling I might have killed off one of my two external filters when I gave it a good clean out but the other should be sufficient to keep the tank going.

I have added new sponges, polishing pads and given the gravel a good clean but still, after 6 days the water is very murky.

I did another 30% water change today and when I filled it back up I noticed the water was clearer, however within a few hours it was cloudy again.

I do have a few BN's in there, dozens in fact, they have grown up since birth and now I have approx 50-80 medium to adult size BNs, HOWEVER, this has been the norm for months now. I don’t see why it should suddenly all go Pete Tong.

I expect I have killed a filter and now the biological load is too much, but find this hard to believe as my cleaning regimes have been like this for the last couple of years.

Any advice welcome, I currently have just left the tank to do its own thing before I empty it and start all over!

RIO240 – 305 and another Aquais (?) 700
Tanks has been fine for 4 years.
Couple of cories
Few Neons
Around 15 guppies
Lots and lots of BNs that I have grown from eggs.

The clouds are white in colour, all stats appear normal.

Thanks

It sounds like a bacterial bloom to me probably caused by the filter being knocked out like you say. It should clear up as your filter recolonises with bacteria. I'm not too sure how to deal with it as I've not experienced it personally but I would do frequent small waterchanges until it clears which shouldn't be too much longer. Hopefully someone else who knows how to deal with it will be here soon.

I tend to agree with Myrtle, if it is a bacterial bloom then the clouded water should be gone in a few days.

Keith.

Agreed. Keep up water changes and be patient. It will clear
